Update: The winners are Renee C, Tahira P and Athy L!! Congratulations  🙂

I will be holding a giveaway of some of my favorite masks (and some fun extras) next month – sort of a Charlotte’s Web Mask Pouch, so watch out for that if you missed out this time!! xx

As you know I LOVE MaskGenie’s Mask Pouch service and I am so pleased to announce that I am holding a giveaway sponsored by MaskGenie herself!! The pouch that you can win is the Limited Edition ’10 Days in the Wild’ one and you can see Genie’s unpouching video here:

What is MaskGenie?

MaskGenie is a monthly mask service with a difference.  You do not have to commit to a monthly subscription but just buy a pouch as and when you want one. Genie provides monthly pouches of 5 different masks (at $12) and 10 different masks (at $22) every month. The masks are all from reputable Asian brands and international shipping is included in the price. They are available at the website here: http://www.skinilove.com/

She also has occasional themed pouches, such as the Oriental Beauty pouch for Chinese New Year (I have just received the second edition of this) and the limited edition ’10 Days in the Wild’ pouch (that is the one that can be won here!). The pouches are packaged in a drawstring bag each month and are posted securely in a robust envelope marked ‘fragile’ from Hong Kong. I have not had any issues with customs or the postal service to the UK.

I have thoroughly reviewed the January pouch here – MaskGenie January Pouch

and the February pouch here – MaskGenie February Pouch

My reviews of the March and April Pouches are in process and will be posted very soon …yes, I know very late but I haven’t been too well unfortunately and haven’t been able to concentrate for long, and I am working on the May pouches masks (aka putting them on my face!) as we speak. My June pouch is on it’s way.

The Giveaway!

This giveaway is for 3 Limited Edition ’10 Days in the Wild’ pouches. This pouch was for sale at $34, inclusive of shipping internationally.

Animal masks are currently a big hit in Asia, and many celebrities have taken photos of themselves in an animal mask and posted it onto their social media! Not only are the masks super cute, they will actually moisturize and brighten your skin too! Have fun with the masks ~ discover your animal type and unlock the secrets of your true self!  There are 10 different masks inside, all of different animals.’

I have not personally tried this pouch – this one I missed out on unfortunately but they are epically fun masks! Each one not only has a animal face printed onto it but they also have the same great skincare benefits of your more everyday plain sheet masks. Hey, if you are going to scare the neighbour / children / postman / rabbit, you may as well do it in style!!

MaskGenie – February Pouch Review

logo

It still feels a bit bizarre writing this so long after the month in question but as it’s a review rather than an unpouching I hope that you don’t mind the strange juxtaposition of months! I am working my way through the March pouch at the moment and will hopefully be receiving the April one soon. I have also been a bit inconvenienced by severe tooth pain this month due to my mild brittle bones issues (nothing new but annoying!) which didn’t help my concentration at all. Several root canals and nerve extractions later, hopefully I will be pain free for a while 🙂

MaskGenie

You may notice from the new logo above that MaskGenie now has the new website (www.skinilove.com) up and running! So a couple of things have changed from January but not the important stuff:

‘MaskGenie is a monthly masks membership service, which delivers a beautifully packaged drawstring pouch straight to your door containing a variety of fun and exciting masks from Asia. Unlike other masks subscription services, MaskGenie gives you the freedom to choose what you buy and when you buy, so you never feel tied to anything. Throughout the year, there will also be Limited Edition Luxury Mask Pouches that you can purchase as an extra treat for yourself or for a friend.’

There are two options to choose from for the monthly pouches:

$22.00 (£15 approx) for 10 different masks

$12.00 (£8.20 approx) for 5 different masks

This includes all international shipping and as it is not a sub service, you just go onto the website (this is the change) every month and order your pouch. If you do this before the last friday of the month you will receive the next months pouch.

Genie will post a spoiler for each pouch on the Facebook page before the payment deadline and then a full unpouching video (link at the end for this one) when the pouches have been sent out so that you know what you are going to get! Some people watch because they have no self-restraint (me!) and some prefer a surprise when their pouch arrives! 🙂

The Pouch!

DSCN0925

Red this month! Again there is a little slip in the pouch referring you to the Facebook page for further information about the masks which is not my favorite thing (see January) and it is pretty tiresome to have to trawl down the page looking for the relevant one although now that the website is up and running the reviews of the ones that Genie has tried have been listed on there.

To be honest though, I am not always online when I want to use a mask and I’m not going to power up the laptop just to check for instructions / ingredients. I’m lucky in that I am not sensitive to anything in particular but I can see that not having the information to hand in the form of a card, would be especially annoying for people who do need to check beforehand. Out of 10 products this month, 3 have no instructions or ingredients in English and one other is obviously not a full list (with the generic ‘herb extracts’ listed). A small card with basic instructions and full ingredients would be wonderful but is only a small gripe really.

I have used all of 10 masks this month 🙂 I’ll do these, as ever, in the order that Genie presents them in her unpouching video. I’ll only list usage instructions if they are different from the norm (take out of pouch – put on face – wait – pat in essence – go about life as normal).

Mask No 1: Mediheal Capping Pack (possible variants: S.Q.S Midnight Capping Pack / W.H.P Shower Capping Pack) (Korea)

DSCN0946

I got one of the masks intended for use in the shower.

Description:

W.H.P = White Hydrating Program. Wash off type pack to provide light and bright skin. Niacinamide whitening ingredients provide skin tone up. Prevent darkening giving clean and clear glowing skin. Firm cream clay formula.

How to Use:

1. After face wash, use toner and apply onto face avoiding eye and lip area.

2. After 15-20 minutes, rinse off with lukewarm water, finish with cold water.

Major Ingredients (full list in Korean):

Niacinamide Whitening mix, Rice Extract, Licorice Extract.

Review:

Although the variant that Genie used and introduced in her unpouching was the sleeping pack variant (She gave the sleeping mask 10/10 on the Facebook page), the main point of interest of these masks is the packaging which comes with a lid that you twist open, and then push back to close, so that it’s not just a single use mask. There is intended to be enough product for you to use 2-3 times.

shower capping(source)

You can all breathe a sigh of relief as I am not going to subject you to any hideous pictures of me in masks in this review. I have taken a few for the next one but as usual THIS is my face whenever a camera is aimed at it:

me when people try to take my picture tallulah(With thanks to the lovely Darwin, Source)

This variant is a thick white clay type of mask which surprised me a little as being a hydrating / whitening mask I did not expect clay! The scent of this mask is very very floral (VERY!). I couldn’t pinpoint the scent exactly and since I have no idea what the ingredients are I can’t enlighten you but if you don’t like strong scents I would avoid this one as it is a quite old fashioned scent and it does linger and is still there when you are washing it off.

I don’t tend to take 20 minute showers as I don’t wash my hair in them (contact lens issues again!) so I just used this as a normal wash off mask. I had to find the information on how long to keep it on from the net, as there is nothing on the packet (this is when an informational card would come in handy).

The mask spreads fairly thickly and dries very quickly (within 5 minutes). I found the cap a little bit fiddly to close, especially the first time I used it when the pouch was more full, as it is difficult to do without putting pressure on the pouch itself and squirting mask everywhere. The pouch is also a bit of a strange shape and I found that the corners made it very difficult to extract the last bits of mask when it was almost finished so I think it is a bit wasteful to be honest. I used it three times but I was pretty generous so you would probably be able to eke it out for 4.

Whilst on my face it felt a little bit burny (which I almost never get with masks as I am not sensitive), it was a bit gritty when washing off but came off easily. My skin was a bit pink and felt tight and shiny not hydrated. It was definitely not whitened at all.

Unfortunately I would not buy this mask again as it did not suit me or do anything in particular.  It is a shame as I really liked the Mediheal Mogongtox Soda Bubble sheet from the last MaskGenie pouch and have already bought some more of those.

Mask No 2: Adin Herb Essence Mask (Korea)

DSCN0940

Description:

Enriched with extracts from herbs including rosemary, lavender, ginseng, lemon and others, it provides moisture and various nutrients to the tensed and stressed skin, and keeps it comfortable and healthy.  Formulated with Vitamin E, collagen and hyaluronic acid, it makes skin moist and elastic, and also reduces tension in the stressed skin and has astringent effect.  It is especially suitable for use when special care is needed, such as when the skin looks dull rather than vital, or when dryness is felt, it comforts skin through providing nutrition and moisture immediately as well as calming.

Ingredients:

Purified Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Hyaluronic Acid Extract, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Dipropylene Glycol, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Collagen Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Herb Extract, Fragrance.

Special Instructions:

In Summer: Keep the package in refrigerator

In Winter: before using, soak the package 2-3 minutes in warm water.

Review:

Genie hadn’t tried this mask but included it because of the colour of the package and the herbs.

I was really looking forward to this mask, expecting a gorgeously scented relaxing, soothing experience as I love herbal scents but unfortunately this was just a bog standard every day mask. This was the first one that I used and it was before I started writing notes on the masks at the time but from what I can remember the smell was the most disappointing thing. It smelt more like toilet cleaner than delicious lavender and rosemary. It was a very synthetic smell and to be honest, to me it smelt a little bit ‘off’. I still have the empty pouch (I save them for this reason) and although I can detect a faint herbal smell, it still smells very strongly of a not very nice air freshener.

tumblr_medz4n222o1qaqsz7(source)

Luckily, the scent did not persist too long whilst on the face and the fit was average. I left it on for the full 30 minutes prescribed (I used the summer method as I like the added cooling effect). The results were just average as well. My face looked slightly moisturised but that was about it. Not one of my favorites and I did not find it particularly relaxing.

Mask No 3: Tuningface Essence Mask Sheet – Dramatic Lifting (Korea)

DSCN0941

There was a choice of three types from this brand – the yellow (Dramatic Lifting), blue (Different Moisturising) or pink (Amazing Brightening). I got the Yellow 🙂

Tuning Face1(source)

Description:

Younger skin of the face. Firming & Lifting Phyto-collagen helps anti-stress of skin. Volume: 23ml of essence

Review:

With the name ‘Dramatic Lifting’ I was expecting miracles ……of the DRAMATIC variety!!

Although Genie had not tried this mask prior to the video unpouching she did try it later and gave this one 7/10. Here is her Facebook picture to show the fit of this one:

Feb tuningface(source)

I had this mask in the fridge for a good few hours before use and followed the instructions on the back to pat the pouch prior to opening to distribute the essence (In fact I shook it out a few times for good measure as I can’t see patting doing much at all!)

The smell of this one was AMAZING! Genie described it as bananas and cherries. I agree, with perhaps a hint of pear and rather than fresh fruit I think it smells more like glacé cherries and fruit schnapps or a fruity cocktail (perhaps that was wishful thinking!)

nice-smell(source)

When looking at the ingredients there are no fruits listed BUT there is alcohol, so that may be where my craving for cocktails came from 😉

NB: A lot of research has been done into Alcohol in skincare products. The consensus is usually that it is a bad thing. Personally, I have never had any problems with it – probably because I have very oily skin. I do know that people with sensitive or very dry skin would be best to avoid products containing it in higher levels. I try to always list the ingredients in these products so that you can make an informed decision if it is something that you would rather avoid. I hope to write a post (or a few) in the future pulling together the most recent research about various pertinent skincare ingredients as I do love to research things! Let me know if you would be interested in the comments.

The fit of this mask was a bit weird. It had a lot of pockets and folds that wouldn’t smooth out (as I think you can see in Genie’s picture).. You would smooth one and another would pop up next to it! The eye holes were a bit too small and felt like the material was encroaching onto my eye from one side or another but the fit around the sides of the nose was good and snug although the perennial problem of air bubbles caused by too much material across the bridge of the nose reared up again. There was plenty of material to fold under the chin.

I removed the mask after about 30 minutes and it was still pretty damp. My skin looked smooth, healthy and clear and very slightly plumped up, especially the nose / mouth lines. I also noticed that a couple of blemishes appeared lighter. My skin did not feel sticky even after I added the excess essence.

But ‘Dramatic lifting’?? I don’t know! My skin felt a little tighter but that was about it. False advertising, lol.

This was a decent everyday mask. I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase it but I would use it again and I’d try the other two in the range.

Mask No 4: Deary Invisible Elastic Mask – Chamomile Arbutin Whitening (Taiwan)

DSCN0945

This was another mask with some variations sent out. We could have received Pomegranate Renewing and Whitening, Edelweiss Hyaluronic Acid Moisturising, Chamomile Arbutin Whitening or (thank fuck I didn’t get) Rose Idebenone Whitening. The mask gods were smiling on me again 🙂

Description:

Reduces the appearance of annoying dark spots and acne scars, leaving your skin feeling perfectly petal-supple! The Azulene and bisabolol extracted from chamomile are combined with marigold essence to repair, soften and brighten skin. This mask soothes irritation while bolstering the skin’s natural defenses against environmental damage. A DOH-approved skin-whitening agent, arbutin helps to reduce melanin production and fade spots; it clears and evens out the skin tone. The dullness-reducing African potato extract is combined with pearl powder, rich in amino acids and trace elements, to make your skin radiate from within.

Ingredients:

Water, Glycerine, 1,3-Butylene Glycol, 1,3-Propanediol (Zemea®), Hydrolyzed Silk, Algae Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Chamomile Extract, Calendula Extract, Arbutin, Hypoxis Rooperi Rhizome Extract, Pearl Powder, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Nicotinamide, Allantoin, Methyl P-Hydroxybenzoate, Methylisothiazolinone, Fragrance.

Review:

This mask has got some great ingredients and although this was again one of the first ones that I tried out of this pouch (pre-notepad) I did quite like it.

The fit of this mask was pretty good – as shown below by the lovely Genie (with the Edelweiss variety):

Feb Deary mask

There were no superfluous air pockets and folds. There was plenty of essence with this mask and it smelt really nice – it kind of  reminds of something but I really can’t remember what! I think it is a skincare item that I have used abroad as it conjures up holidays in Germany and Austria for me (I know! I’m really weird with smells. They remind me of places but not of what they are 🙂 ). I think that the smell is actually that of Chamomile and possibly Calendula (Marigold) as a lot of skincare products contain them. The scent is mild anyway so will not annoy. I fell asleep in this mask as it was a very soothing smell and after removing, my face felt very hydrated and soft.  A good every day mask and I would like to try the others (apart from the Rose obviously!).

Update: I asked my father to sniff the mask pouch and the winner is SAVLON!! That would be why it reminded me of holidays … adventures with so many scrapes and bruises!

Mask No 5: Secret Key Gung Solution Doctor’s Mask – Lifting (Korea)

DSCN0937

There was a selection this time between Pink (Lifting with Peptide and Collagen), Yellow (Brightening with gradual illumination of the skintone by Vitamin C and Lemon), Green (Calming and soothing with Tea Tree and Aloe Vera) and Blue (Moisturising with Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide).

Review:

For more about the brand Secret Key itself please see my Secret Key Memebox post.
The Gung Solution range is Secret Key’s cosmeceutical, dermatological range of masks. This is a cotton blend face sheet mask with eye flaps for if you like to lie down and relax with your mask on. Here is Genie with the Blue Moisturising mask on:

I found the pouch a bit difficult to open because of its shape at the top and almost resorted to scissors but just about managed.

This mask has a mild creamy scent, sort of reminiscent of hand cream. Slightly floral but very subtle. There is tonnes of essence on a decent thickish sheet and I found the fit to be very good, apart from the ever problematic nose area. The nose flap was very short and narrow and I had to gently stretch it slightly. There was plenty of material to overlap at the chin, which helps the mask to feel snug. I found the eye and mouth holes an ideal size for me and I do enjoy the eye flaps as I like to lie down and relax with a mask on if I can. Genie cut the eye flaps off and used them at the sides of the nose, which is a great idea for when you just don’t have the time to lie down.

I had put this mask in the fridge for a good few hours before use and when on it felt lovely, relaxing and cooling and I fell asleep for approximately one hour. The mask itself was dry by this time but my skin underneath still felt moist. My skin looked plumped up and my nose/mouth lines were definitely more shallow and less noticeable. My face felt firmer and more bouncy! Not sure if ‘lifted’ exactly but definitely healthy, clear and nourished. I did notice that the pores around my nose looked a little open but since this mask was not supposed to be dealing with them I didn’t mind so much and it caused no issues.

I liked this mask and saw a noticeable difference after use. In fact I have already bought and received one of the Moisturising variety from a UK sale and 3 of each of the others from Beauty Net Korea (see below) on ebay.  I may review the lot 🙂

Mask No 6: Foodaholic Snail Natural Essence Mask (Korea)

DSCN0944

Description:

The optimum skin condition is maintained by snail extract to make elastic and moisturising. For elasticity and nutrition, Contains Snail Secretion Filtrate. Filled skin with rich moisture and makes the skin tight and shiny. It gives your skin a fresh cool feeling and is rich with moisture and nourishment for healthier skin. This mask will tighten your skin and provide long lasting moisture with moisture retaining properties. All Foodaholic Natural Essence Masks keeps the moist hydrating sense based on silky touch and excellent contact of 3D shape natural pulp mask.

Ingredients:

Water, Glycerin, Alcohol, Butylene Glycol, Trehalose, Panthenol, Methylparaben, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Snail Secretion Filtrate (0.1%), Beta-Glucan, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Corydalis Ochotensis Extract, Chenopodium Album Flower Extract, Lactuca Indica Extract, Draba Nemorosa Extract.

Review:

Foodaholic does a whole range of 3D masks (mostly food related unsurprisingly) that are relatively cheap and readily available. Again this was a pre-notepad mask but I do remember that the fit of this mask was great! The fact that it is 3D means that rather than a simple shape cut out of a circle of material, more care seems to have been taken and areas like the nose and chin adhere more closely to the natural curves of your face, with seams (one main one down the centre to fit the curve of your face) and slits around the edges so that you can adjust the fit. It is snug and cups the chin very well especially.

fdmk-0001-02(source)

The shape also makes it easier to do things whilst you are wearing it (hoovering, aerobics?), without fear of it falling off…….not that I do that.  I’m all about the relaxing with my mask on watching some great TV.

Game of thumps Bun Hatter FB

Yes, that IS a throne made out of asparagus. There are people more crackers than me out there!

As Genie says in her unpouching video, this mask will fit all sizes of face including men. The mask is easy to put on and smells very slightly earthy to me. It has a very mild smell though. There is not a lot of the slightly thick essence but plenty for the time that you will be wearing it.The sheet is made out of a natural wood pulp so do not be surprised if it is not entirely white and pristine – there may be natural marks and spots in the material as it won’t have been bleached and treated. When I removed this mask, my skin looked glowing, bright and shiny. It gave a good moisturising and nourishing boost without stickiness. I really liked this one and plan to buy some (ok, a lot!) of the others in the range to try out 🙂

Review:

Again I feel like making Pirates of the Caribbean jokes whenever I mention Black Pearl (got to get over that – it seems to be a popular ingredient in K Beauty and this could get very boring!) but any excuse for a picture of Johnny, right?

That will absolutely be the last time … I promise. My Beauty Diary is a very popular brand and is apparently the first brand of sheet mask that many people use. I think these people are not from the UK, as I had never heard of MBD growing up and it is not available here in the shops. The first sheet mask I ever used would probably be good old Montague Jeunesse (although famed for their wash off mask sachets, they do sheet masks as well).

Short interlude: Apparently, MJ has now changed their name and this is their new one …anyone guess why I included this? 🙂

montague jeunesse(source)

Anywhoo, this was my first experience with a My Beauty Diary Mask and I liked it! It was a thick sheet with a protective cover one side (a bit like the ones that you get with hydrogels but not usually with your bog standard sheet masks). This does make unwrapping a little easier as there is less chance of ripping it and it makes it easier to know which side to put against your face as well (the side protected by the backing sheet).

It smelt a bit perfumed but luckily that did not persist once the mask is on your face. There is plenty of essence but the mask is just right, not too soggy. It fit quite well, snug around the eyes and mouth, with the nose as usual being the problematic area. The nose on this had an especially wide bridge and that results in an awkward fit with air bubbles. The nose was also a bit short (or my nose is too long, either way). It fit nicely under the chin.

The mask had been in the fridge for a few hours when I used it so it was nice and cooling to wear. I fell asleep and woke about 2 hours later with the mask a bit dry but my skin underneath was fine. There was a little bit of essence left in the pack, which I applied, and my skin looked really nice – plumped up with fine lines diminished, hydrated, even in tone, glow-y and a bit brighter. Not really whiter though but I don’t think I can get much paler at the moment!  I would definitely like to try this one again and I can’t wait to try some of their other types as well. I have just bought a Cactus one from a UK seller and hope to order a few more.

Review:

‘Nothing can go wrong with Etude House’ – MaskGenie. Well, she is right! I do like Etude House products, especially their masks! (see my post on a selection of Etude House Masks).

Firstly I must say how great the packaging of these is. The pouch was really easy to open by ripping down the side. Inside is a little flip tray containing the patches. This was nice and secure and kept the patches really moist. There is lots of essence, with no distinct smell. You have to remove a clear / white protective netting cover and the patches themselves (sheet not hydrogel) are even in shape rather than some eye patches that you see that are shaped like a sort of teardrop. This picture shows the shape of these pretty well.

11b1e4898f005056b743bc(source)

I did find this shape a little harder to use than the teardrop version. They do not cover as much area as you cannot fit them as closely to the shape of your under-eye. These did feel very snug and refreshing whilst on however (they had been in the fridge prior to use). They did not move around much once on yet they were easy to adjust if you needed to. They totally dried in about 30 minutes.

I could not see any particular improvement to my under eye area (although I don’t particularly suffer from dark circles) and I needed to apply an eye cream afterwards as usual, as they did not feel that moisturised. I did enjoy using them due to the cooling, refreshing, de-puffing sensation though and would use them again because of that and the convenience of individually wrapped ‘portions’ that are a lot less messy than the large pots of hydrogels like the MYPU ones from the Night Care Memebox.

Mask No 9: Skinfood Black Bean Nose Pack (Korea)

DSCN0949

Description:

Containing black bean extract, this nose pack removes blackheads and dead skin on nose, keeping it clean and smooth.
Easy and convenient way to keep clean nose skin.
Removes blackheads and dead skin thoroughly. Black beans with rich nutrition provide silky skin texture. Easy sheet type nose pack.

Ingredients:

Not given on separate mask packet (presumably on the box as it comes in a set of 7).

Main ingredient: Black Bean extract

Review:

Apparently Genie found these quite difficult to get hold of so she hadn’t tried them herself. This is another black / coloured nose sheet (which are not my favorites as I find it more difficult to see the results!)

51owMEqGt0L__SX450_(Source)

The instructions given on the back amused me:

‘Identify blackheads on your nose pack by the eye’

‘A look at the used nose pack from a right angle gives you a real glance of removed blackheads’

But this is so much more difficult than it has to be on a black or coloured surface – it will always be white blackhead strips for the win for me, as I like to see the icky results.  It IS satisfying to see these things working:

216

(source)

It has been a lot less satisfying since I have been using a Clarisonic as there is much much less to extract though!

Anyway, back to the review. I really like Skinfood but this was not my favorite of their products. The strip smelt similar to the Purederm Charcoal nose strip (from Memebox) and the Etude House Green Tea one (January MaskGenie), slightly earthy and musty. Not the most pleasant smell but not a deal breaker.

The main problem that I found with this one however was that the black dye started to come off when the strip was dampened first onto my fingers and then around my nose whilst I was smoothing / pressing it on. It was seeping out of the edges!

When I removed the strip my nose was now partially dyed black and it took a bit of washing to remove this. Apart from that, the strip worked as well as any other and although difficult to see it did remove a few pesky blackheads.

I would not buy this strip again though because of the leaking dye and because it worked no better or worse than others I have used. I don’t know whether anyone else experienced this. I couldn’t find any other reviews online that mentioned this issue. My nose was no wetter than normal when I use these things and the weather was not particularly warm or humid – just an average UK March evening. Perhaps I got a dud one? I’ll give it one point less than the Etude House Green Tea from last month because of this.

Review:

Another one that was difficult to get hold of. A rare mask 🙂

This one had been chilling in the fridge for a couple of days when I used it. There wasn’t much of a smell with this one, mainly fresh and slightly of alcohol (which it does contain – see ingredient list).

It was made of a quite thick material and is another 3D mask. It was a bit of a strange fit, there were a lot of flaps at the edges that seemed a bit too big or long for me and the essence is very watery so it did not stick very well around the outer parts of my face or indeed, anywhere that well.

The fit was great around the nose, with an extra long nose piece and snug at the sides but the strip between the nose and the mouth was too wide and either had to be bunched / folded up or drooped down over my lips. The fit under the chin is very good, as it cups the chin closely.

The information on the mask pouch did not really enlighten me as to what this mask was meant to do so I looked up Co-enzyme Q10 (otherwise known as Ubiquinone).

it is a vitamin-like, fat-soluble substance present in all human cells. It is responsible for cell protection and production of the body’s energy.

A handful of studies have shown that coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may have an effect on skin and the appearance of wrinkles, most notably by reducing UV damage, stimulating healthy collagen production, and reducing substances in damaged skin that wreck havoc on its support structure (Sources: Biofactors, Volume 32, 2008, pages 237–243; and November 2005, pages 179–185; Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, March 2006, pages 30–38; and www.naturaldatabase.com).

There is also research showing that sun exposure depletes the presence of CoQ10 in the skin. This is not surprising because many of the skin’s components become diminished on exposure to the sun. The latest research suggests that topical application of CoQ10 has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. As such, it is one of many helpful antioxidants for skin, but it is not the only one or the “best” (Sources: Biofactors, September-October 2009, pages 435–441; Journal of Investigative Dermatology, 2005, volume 125, number 4, pages 12–13; and Journal of Dermatological Science, August 2001, Supplement, pages 1–4).’ (source)

Sounds pretty good to me! However, this is one of the first times I have ever taken off a mask at the lower end of the time suggested. This was because it was not sticking properly and kept coming away from my face. It had dried out very quickly and it was a pretty humid day so not sure why! I felt a bit leprous with bits peeling away from me  and this kept popping into my mind!

cfe6ec5d3340737c75d3e35123c067c8

I think that because the essence was so watery, it had not adhered to the mask very well as there was plenty of essence left in the packet. (If I used this one again I would add this prior to using the mask in the hope that it would stick better). I added all of this to my face and neck when I removed it. The essence felt a bit tingly but only a slight sensation.

My skin looked a bit pink (maybe the alcohol) but even and clear. It felt a bit sticky and tight though so not one to use before going anywhere. I would like to try another mask with Co-enzyme Q10 but I don’t think that I would try this one again as it was not a relaxing experience and the results were not good enough to be worth it.

Conclusion

Another good pouch from MaskGenie. I think the great thing about this service is that you can try out masks that you otherwise would not be able to get hold of as a one off and see if you like them enough to order more. With this and the January pouch I have discovered some masks that I have absolutely loved and want to buy more of (and indeed, have done) and also crossed some of my list that were not up to the standard I look for / did not suit my skin at all. Everyone’s skin is different and we all look for different things from a sheet mask. I hope that the information that I give helps you decide whether a mask is worth trying out, even if it was one that was not for me.

You can see the process that Genie goes through to pick the masks each month in her February unpouching video here.

Out of the 10 masks, I would definitely be buying / using 3 again (same as last month and that to me is worth the process of trial and error).

As I said at the top the new website is now up and running and the pouches that are available on the site are as follows:

ETUDE HOUSE – a wealth of Masks!

Etude-House-Logo-vector-image(source)

Two things that you should know about me:

1. I love Korean skincare – it works for me much better than Western equivalents (not saying that there aren’t exceptions – there are of course and I love finding them). K Beauty suits my skin type (oily, sometimes dehydrated and starting to age), it uses ingredients that are miles ahead of anything seen over here and is often much better value for money (even if you take into account shipping from Korea).

2. My favorite type of product by far are masks – of any type, shape and form.  I’m totally obsessed with masks! This has always been the case. When I was very little I used to make my own real mud masks or masks out of kitchen bits and bobs. I graduated onto very expensive Western branded concoctions which sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. I have my all time favorites and some ingredients will always work for me (bee venom, snail, hyaluronic acid) so if I see a Western mask with decent ingredients I WILL buy it. However, for sheet masks, Korean beauty is the place to shop! Unfortunately they haven’t yet invented a mask that does this but I wait in everlasting hope:

Etude House – the brand

Etude House (Hangul: 에뛰드하우스) was established in 1966 but became the company we know in 1985 (not quite as old as me!!) and is part of the overall global conglomerate that is Amore Pacific (which also owns brands such as Sulwhasoo, Laneige, Mamonde and Innisfree). The brand name ‘Etude’ comes from Frederic Chopin’s studies of the piano.  Etude means study in French. Their brand image is very pink and pretty, very girly and youthful. Everyone is a princess.

1(source)

Now if you know me, you know that I am not exactly a ‘pink’ person.  I like pink lips and cheeks but not clothes or decor.  I do however like anything cute and therefore…… yes, I AM a princess!!

My face if anyone dares say I’m not…..

yes I'm a princess

(Thanks Moo for your undeniable princess-ness! Source)

The Masks

Etude House makes a variety of sheet masks, from standard sheet masks to bio jelly coconut masks, from place specific (eye, nose, chin etc) masks to Hydrogel masks and I love them all! In this post I will be concentrating on some of the ‘I Need You’ Sheet Masks and the ‘Skin Note’ Deep Moisturising Hydrogel Masks.

Etude House ‘I Need You’ Sheet Masks

DSCN1276

Etude House makes 20 different variations of these masks. These are (with the ones I have tried so far in bold):

  • Aloe
  • Collagen
  • Hyaluronic
  • Royal Jelly
  • Pearl
  • Green Tea
  • Lemon
  • Pomegranate
  • Tea Tree
  • Vita Complex
  • Olive
  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Mugwort
  • Korean Ginseng
  • Mango
  • Snail
  • Acai Berry
  • Bamboo
  • Rice
  • Honey

Directions for use: (I’ll put this once for each type as they are obviously all the same)

1. Apply toner to skin after cleansing.

2. Remove mask from pouch and apply to face, placing mask to fit eye and lip area.

3. Remove mask after 10~15 minutes and lightly massage remaining solution into skin with hands.

Mask Fit:

The same for all this type. (+ Bonus funny / scary picture!)

These sheet masks fit fairly well. The width and length are fine for me, there is a slight overlap under the chin which makes for a more snug fit, the eye and mouth holes are not too big or too small (this is sounding like Goldilocks now…..) The only issue, as always, is the nose area. My nose seems to be much too narrow, long and large for Korean sheet masks and this results in the excess material at the top making that area not fit well and the mask always finishes very short of the end of my schnozz. Funnily enough the hydrogels are very different!

And now for the demonstration …. you have seen one sheet mask selfie you have seen them all!?!  This was the Mugwort mask. This terrible picture demonstrates the fit around the nose area.

FSCN1437

Disclaimer: I took this picture after falling asleep in my contact lenses (hence the blood shot-edness) and without said contact lenses in ….aka I could not see a thing! Not the camera or myself in the mirror. It was basically a case of aim the camera somewhere at my head and click. My view at the time was something more like this (which is much more pleasant I’m sure you’ll agree):

DSCN1439

1. ‘I Need You’ Collagen Sheet Mask

DSCN1290

SKIN FIRMING. This mask sheet contains Collagen (Hydrolyzed Collagen) that strengthens the skin for firm, youthful skin.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Dimethicone, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract,  Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Panthenol, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Polyacrylate, Allantoin, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Hydrolysed Collagen (2mg), Trideceth-6, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach) Leaf Extract, Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Gingko Biloba Leaf Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

Review: This mask had a fairly thick milky white serum and did not really smell of anything in particular. With this one, I did not fall asleep (hallelujah!). The mask had been in the fridge for a few hours so felt very soothing and calming. After about 20 minutes I removed the mask and patted the remaining essence (there was plenty!) onto my face. My skin felt a little firmer and tighter. It felt moisturised but a bit sticky. All in all, a decent nightly mask which will provide mainly hydration and maybe a little bit of firming / tightening.

Score: 7.5/10

2. ‘I Need You’ Pearl Sheet Mask

DSCN1288

BRIGHT COMPLEXION. This mask sheet contains pearl extract (Hydrolyzed Pearl) full of amino acids and minerals, brightening up dull skin for a bright and clear complexion.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Alcohol, Panthenol, Carbomer, PEG60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Xanthan Gum, Hydrolysed Pearl (20mg), Potassium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Allantoin, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach) Leaf Extract, Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Gingko Biloba Leaf Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

Review: As usual, I left the sheet mask in the fridge before application so that it gave a cooling / soothing effect. This mask does not really smell of much apart from a standard creamy skincare smell. This one has a clear, slightly thinner consistency serum I didn’t really see much of a whitening/brightening effect on my skin when I removed the mask and patted in the extra essence but I did look healthy, hydrated and glowing with an even tone, albeit slightly sticky.  This was one of my favorites.

Score: 8 / 10

3. ‘I Need You’ Green Tea Mask

This mask sheet contains green tea extract (Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract), providing moist and comforting relief to sooth out rough and irritated skin. Confession: I tried this mask last year when I received one in the From Jeju Memebox. This was a long time before I started this blog and subsequently I do not have any photographs or the ingredients list. I do remember not being that impressed at the time and I think compared to the ones I have tried here this was my least favorite. It did smell rather pleasantly of green tea I remember but it didn’t have any discernible effects, maybe because my skin is generally not rough and wasn’t irritated at the time. It also left my skin a bit sticky.

Score: 5/10 (There are plenty of the others I would buy first although I will try it again and change the score if I was obviously deranged the first time I used it).

4. ‘I  Need You’ Mugwort Sheet Mask

DSCN1283

SOOTHING & BRIGHT. This mask sheet contains mugwort extract (Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract) that improves circulation for a clearer complexion.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Alcohol, Panthenol, Carbomer, PEG60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Xanthan Gum, Artemisia Princeps Leaf Extract (20mg), Potassium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Allantoin, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach) Leaf Extract, Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Gingko Biloba Leaf Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

Review: This one had a lovely smell, somewhat reminiscent of cucumber (which is strange as there is none in it .. I presume it is the Mugwort itself, which I have never tried before). It smelt very fresh and clean.

‘Mugwort is a common name for several species of aromatic plants in the genus Artemisia…..Artemisia Princeps or Japanese mugwort, is a perennial, very vigorous plant that grows to 1.2 meters and is known as yomogi (ヨモギ) in Japanese….In Korea, it is called ssuk (쑥) or tarae ssuk (타래쑥), which is deeply related to Dangun Sinhwa (단군신화), legend of Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom… Known as a blood cleanser, it is believed to have different medicinal properties depending on the region it is collected. In some regions, mugwort thins the blood, while in another region, it is claimed to have hallucinogenic properties, causing some to pass out from direct skin contact (dermal absorption) with the active chemicals. For this reason, some Koreans also wear a silk sleeve when picking mugwort plants…..Mugwort pollen is one of the main sources of hay fever and allergic asthma in North Europe, North America and parts of Asia‘   (source: Wikipedia)

This mask had plenty of a clear watery gel type essence. The sheet itself was a decent thickness and adhered to the face well, only falling away a bit when madly trying to aim a camera at one’s face! This one had not been in the fridge but it was still pretty cold as the weather was a tad icy. It felt very cooling and soothing. There was plenty of essence in the pack, which I applied liberally after I took the mask off. The essence had a slightly sticky feel as it dried but that was fine for use as a night time mask. This one did not feel particularly moisturising but my pores looked smaller and more refined and the tone of my skin was even, clear and more healthy looking than normal!

Score: 8/10

5. ‘I Need You’ Snail Sheet Mask

DSCN1282

Look at those little snaily faces!!

SMOOTH FIRMING. This mask sheet contains snail mucus ingredient (Snail Secretion Filtrate) that protects the skin’s natural barrier for smooth and elastic skin.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Dimethicone, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract,  Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Panthenol, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Xanthan Gum, Snail Secretion Filtrate (20mg), Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Polyacrylate, Allantoin, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Trideceth-6, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach) Leaf Extract, Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Gingko Biloba Leaf Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

Review: I love anything snail … I may have mentioned that before! Snail mucin has magical properties that can fade acne scars, smooth and revitalise skin and clear the complexion. My HG essence is the Benton Snail Bee and I tend to enjoy most snail items that I have tried (apart from Secret Key’s EGF snail masks for some reason – see Secret Key box post and January Mask Genie post).

This mask was slightly different. The sheet itself was a tiny bit thicker and white rather than translucent. The essence itself was also thick, white and very creamy. There was no distinctive smell. I wore this one in the day as I had unfortunately fallen asleep in my makeup the night before and my skin needed some serious TLC. I found that it stayed on my face very well as I was on the computer so not that active! The mask was still damp after about 20 minutes so I took it off and applied the rest of the essence from the pouch. My skin was left very happy – shiny (in a good way!), even and glowing. I would get this one again.

Score: 8/10

6. ‘I Need You’ Rice Mask Sheet

DSCN1286

PURIFYING. This mask sheet contains rice extract (Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract) that brightens up dull and rough skin for smooth and healthy skin.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Dimethicone, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract,  Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Panthenol, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Xanthan Gum, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract (20mg), Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Polyacrylate, Allantoin, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Trideceth-6, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Prunus Persica (Peach) Leaf Extract, Paeonia Albiflora Root Extract, Gingko Biloba Leaf Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

Review: This one smelt almost like baby lotion (lotion that you put on babies, not lotion MADE out of babies). It was a light creamy smell and very pleasant. The smell, as ever, dissipates once the mask is on. The essence was relatively creamy and white, the same as the Snail and Collagen versions (the ingredients for these are different to the other two masks that I have used recently, which may be why!). When I tried this one (it had been in the fridge) I fell asleep for about 2 hours with it on. The mask itself was dry but my skin underneath felt plump and moist and even more so when I applied the copious amounts of essence left over in the pouch. My skin looked plumped up, brighter, shiny and very smooth. My forehead looked especially tight and glowy.

Score: 8.5/10 (I think this was my favorite but it was very close).

Conclusion

I would definitely try all of these again as the price is very good for the quality and results that they give you. They are a great every day mask to maintain and improve your skin – dependent on the ones you choose and your skins needs at the time. I would like to try all of other types of this mask that Etude House makes in this range as well and I’m putting an order in – especially the Aloe (soothing and cooling), Vita Complex (purify and brighten), Korean Ginseng (nourishing and revitalising) and Acai Berry (antioxidants). I will list places that you can purchase these at the end of the post.

Etude House ‘Skin Note’ Deep Moisturising Hydrogel Masks.

DSCN1265

Etude House makes 5 different types of this mask. I bought one of each. I have only tried 3 so far (in bold), as I use hydrogels less often due to the slightly higher price and generally superior effect – great for a special occasion or once a week rather than every day. I will update this post with further details when I try the final 2!

1. DEEP MOISTURIZING

2. LIFTING UP

3. BRIGHTENING

4. PORE TIGHTENING

5. CALMING FACE

Directions:

1. Prior to application, cleanse face, pat dry and wipe with toner facial pad.

2. Remove mask from pouch, unfold and remove upper and bottom films on both sides of mask.

3. Adhere transparent film-removed side of mask to face, fitting appropriately to eyes and lips.

4. Leave on for 20~30 minutes. Remove mask and massage remaining solution into skin with hands.

*More effective when side with transparent film is adhered to skin.

Mask fit:

As before, they are all the same. I especially like the fact that the side that is supposed to go against your skin is specified, as often (in fact with most hydrogels I have tried) either this is not mentioned and both sides seem exactly the same or in one notable case it specified a colour film which did not exist in reality! I do really appreciate this.

The masks come in two pieces, as have all other hydrogels I have tried. They are very slippery and easily damaged so best to take your time and don’t do this without your eyes in … contact lens / glasses joke 🙂

They do take a bit of adjusting and messing around to get the best fit but when you do so they are snug and will stay put. As they warm up they seem to adhere more closely to your skin. I generally put the bottom half on first (as that seems more likely to slip) and then the top half, slightly overlapping the bottom, to secure it. It is best to stretch it slightly when adjusting and then smooth it out, whilst pressing slightly, to make sure it is adhered firmly.

These hydrogels have an excellent fit: snug around the eyes and mouth (although the bit above the mouth can slip, especially if you are not lying down), much more covered at the sides of the nose than a standard sheet mask and the nose on these is very very long. It overlaps at the end, which is amusing! I have not yet attempted to take a photograph of me in one of these yet but I think one ‘selfie’ per couple of months is quite enough for your poor eyes.

Review:

I used this one quite a while ago now.  I have recently got into the habit of writing down my thoughts at the time of using a product – I have a special notebook and everything! It isn’t this one but I think I should get this:

il_570xN.406275739_p3vf(source)

Anyway, this was unfortunately pre-notebook. I do know that this was my least favorite out of the three that I have tried. It was perfectly ok but I remember that I noticed no particular skin improvements apart from hydration. There was definitely no lifting of any kind going on, which is a shame as I could do with a bit of that!  Perhaps this needs to be a regular usage sort of situation to see anything significant? I am willing to try!

Score: 7/10

3. ‘Skin Note’ Brightening Hydrogel Mask

DSCN1272

This is a Hydrogel Mask with pearl extract (Pearl Powder) and Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate), snugly hugging the face to provide a movie star’s glowing complexion with bright and radiant skin.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ceratonia Siliqua Gum, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), Polyacrylate-13, Polyisobutene, Polysorbate 20, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Phenyl Trimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Allantoin, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Polyacrylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Potassium Hydroxide, Pearl Powder, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate.

Review:

As is usually the case with hydrogels, there is no particular smell with this one – just a general clean skincare scent. This mask had been in the fridge for a few hours when I used it and yes, I fell asleep with it on. When I woke up, all of the gel had absorbed leaving the mesh / base. My skin looked and felt very moist and plumped up but I wouldn’t say that it looked brightened exactly. The results were not as bright and whitened as other masks I have used but I definitely looked more radiant and hydrated, with my nasolabial (nose to mouth) lines looking less deep and my forehead looking smooth. I would definitely try this one again.

Score: 8/10

4. ‘Skin Note’  Pore Tightening Hydrogel Mask

DSCN1274

This is a Hydrogel Mask containing Morocco Clay (Moroccan lava clay) and unripe apple (Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract), snugly hugging the face to tighten and clear up pores for smooth skin.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Ceratonia Siliqua Gum, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), Polyacrylate-13, Polyisobutene, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Allantoin, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Polyacrylate, Bentonite, Ethylhexylglycerin, Peat Water, Acacia Senegal Gum, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Potassium Hydroxide, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract.

Review: The ingredients are a bit different on this one – can’t wait to try it.

5. ‘Skin Note’   Calming & Relaxing Hydrogel Mask

DSCN1269

This is a Hydrogel Mask containing aloe (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract) and glacial water (Water), snugly hugging the face to soothe and freshen up exhausted and irritated skin.

Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Ceratonia Siliqua Gum, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), Polyacrylate-13, Polyisobutene, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Allantoin, Cellulose Gum, Sodium Polyacrylate, Gardenia Florida Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance, Potassium Hydroxide, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract.

Review:

This hydrogel mask had a notably green tinge to the gel and after wallowing in the fridge for a few hours it felt wonderfully cooling, calming and relaxing. I used this after a wash off mask that I will soon be reviewing that had stung a little so the calming, soothing aspect was welcomed. I fell asleep (surprise, surprise) and the gel was mostly absorbed when I woke up.

The results from this one were interesting … the pores at either side of my nose actually looked bigger (a first from any mask!) and a couple of reddish marks from healing hormonal spots did not look any lighter in colour. Perhaps this was not the purpose of the mask though (the cooling sensation would be lovely after sun exposure I think) and the size of the pores did improve as I patted the rest of the essence in and completed my night time routine. There was again plenty of essence left over in the pouch and although it was a little bit sticky, my skin felt like it enjoyed it and was more hydrated afterwards. This was an OK mask, comparable with the Lifting one and not as good as the Brightening.

Score: 7/10

Conclusion

Interestingly, I think I preferred the standard sheet masks overall. I would definitely buy most of them again (especially as the prices are very good) but I would not save the Hydrogels for before special occasions like I do my absolute favorite ones. I would instead use them as a once a week treat to maintain my skin. I will order some more Hydrogels and a decent varied stock of the ‘I Need You’ sheet masks for every day use (and use them dependent on what my skin needs that day).

Etude House makes very good sheet masks at a very decent price. They are fairly easy to get hold of and are often on offer at the various outlets, especially their own website, which has regular well received promotions such as free shipping when you spend over a certain amount. Here are some of my favorite places to shop.

Shop these masks*:

Etude House

‘I Need You’ Masks ($0.95 / 65p, plus shipping)

‘Skin Note’ Hydrogels ($2.50 / £1.70, plus shipping)

Mini Review – How to make your own Sheet Mask!

Monkey Mask Black and White(2)(source)

No??  Oh, OK then.

Quite a while ago now I bought some plain sheet masks from Muji. I really love Muji – every time I go in there I come out with a big brown bag full of lovely and practical items.  it smells AMAZING (due to the many Aroma diffusers puffing out their gorgeous citrus-y smoke) and is really good value for money.

Muji is where I stock up on acrylic storage for my makeup, on wipes for my glasses and on blotting paper for my lovely oily face!  Last visit I also bought a couple of empty spray bottles for an upcoming post / experiment on Patting Water and Mists.

Muji graphic 2(source)

MUJI was founded in Japan in 1980 as an antithesis to the habits of consumer society at that time…..The concept was born of the intersection of two distinct stances: no brand (Mujirushi) and the value of good items (ryohin).

MUJI’s concept of emphasizing the intrinsic appeal of an object through rationalization and meticulous elimination of excess is closely connected to the traditionally Japanese aesthetic of “su” –– meaning plain or unadorned –– the idea that simplicity is not merely modest or frugal, but could possibly be more appealing than luxury.

The Sheet Mask

The items in question are known as Compressed Face Masks and they are available at £3.95 for 20 or £1.50 for 5. I believe that you can buy similar items on Ebay in bulk as well.

They are made of non woven 100% cotton pulp in Japan. Using a compressed facial mask sheet can allow flexibility with ingredients and is also a great idea to use up some products that have been lying around unused in the vast Meme hoard or are soon to expire, as well as true DIY recipes using everyday ingredients.

DSCN1220

They also do an under eye version (£1.50 for 20) that I haven’t tried yet.

DSCN1221

Back view:

DSCN1223

The instructions are obviously not in English, luckily they provide an English instruction pdf on their website.

How to use:

1. Pour face lotion into the cap or something else and soak one sheet with it.

2. After the sheet swells enough with lotion, spread it from the eyes to other parts of your whole face.

3. Stay still to pack the area for 5 to 10 minutes, and then remove the sheet.

Obviously the ‘face lotion’ is up to you (that is the whole point of the endeavour after all) and I would say that the timing is a general guideline and probably (definitely!) is erring on the side of caution there.
NB. Common sense should be liberally applied.

The Essence

I decided to soak mine in the Seatree Syn-ake Essence that I received from Memebox at the end of last year, which had a very short expiry date (Feb 2015).  Got to use it up somehow!

DSCN1213

Product Description:
Seatree Syn-ake Essence contains youth preserving ingredients, such as Syn-ake peptides, similar in composition to snake venom, and hyaluronic acid to help deliver targeted repair – as needed, where needed. Recommended for all skin types, ages and ethnicities, it visibly addresses uneven skin tone, lines and wrinkles for visibly firmer, more radiant and more supple skin.

What is Syn-ake?
Syn-ake is a topical anti-aging treatment….(that) is marketed as an alternative to Botox injections and other types of synthetic treatments that are formulated to get rid of wrinkles, crow’s feet, and other signs of aging. This ingredient, which is used in several different products that are designed to fight aging, is a synthetic form of snake venom. Syn-ake replicates the effects of a peptide that is known as Waglerin 1, which is a component of the venom found in the Temple Viper, a poisonous snake native to southeast Asia.

Syn-ake is designed to work much like Botox, which reduces muscular contractions in the face and reduces cell movement; thereby keeping the skin smooth. The concept behind Syn-ake is that since snake venom causes muscular paralysis, a synthetic derivative of the venom would work to temporarily deaden the muscles in the face to prevent the formation or deepening of wrinkles.’  (source)

BUT

‘experts wonder whether the topical formulations penetrate deeply enough to effectively inhibit muscle contraction. After all, Botox is injected for a reason — to deliver the compound directly into muscle tissue.

“Is the active ingredient really absorbed into the skin like Botox?” asks dermatologist Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell. “The action may just be as a good moisturizer, which does soften wrinkles.”

“Skin is programmed to keep proteins out,” adds Dr. Leslie Baumann, author of “The Skin Type Solution.” And the chemical must travel through several layers of skin and subcutaneous fat to reach and penetrate the muscle.’  (source)

hmmmm…..

I have been using this as my night essence since I received it and it was just ok. No obvious results (I didn’t really notice any improved firmness, suppleness or radiance) but I had no nasty reactions. It did have a bit of a strong perfume smell though, which put me off somewhat, luckily it did not last long.

I spent some time trying to track down the product for price / ingredients but it looks like it has been discontinued. The Seatree website seems to be concentrating on more natural plant based ingredients and some rather funky new packaging artwork. They do still have the Syn-ake hydrogel mask but that looks like it for the range.

‘(a) Natural brand, which was born in the Mangrove forest, gives you beautiful and intact skin from Mother Nature. Seatree embodies Sea and Forest, made of natural and pure ingredients, makes women’s skin healthy and full of vitality, providing skin support’

Making the Mask!

I had actually done this once before and so decided to try it again and attempt to take pictures of the process. The mask pellets are incredibly hard, densely packed little white discs. They are a little like a tiny Draught piece (Checkers for the Americans).

One thing I must point out is that it takes a LOT of essence to get this to swell and work properly.  No wonder masks can be so expensive .. although I very much doubt that they are made by trying to unfurl tightly compressed little pellets from hell 🙂

DSCN1232

Either I am too impatient or I didn’t use enough essence either time but this little nugget was extremely difficult to unravel.  I placed it in a dish and liberally spewed it with essence.

Warning: this picture could look a little dodgy but I promise, that IS the Syn-ake Essence … ahem.

DSCN1238

I hate waiting, so I started trying to unpick it pretty much straight away.

This is the beginning of the unfurling (i.e. after I had been picking at it for a few minutes and sighing a lot)

DSCN1242

It looks like a little flower! I’m thinking this type of course:

AIqJc(source)

This went on for a while – me cursing and trying to unravel it without ripping (unsuccessfully – both times) and this is the end result, which is not as bad as it could have been imo. This is obviously after it had been on my face 🙂

DSCN1249

I think you can sense the look of frustration that imprinted onto it. This is what it is meant to look like:

4547315011902(source)

Conclusion

Once on the face the mask feels like any other, albeit a little less snug and well fitting.  It’s a good way to get more intensive benefits from your product because the mask sheet allows it to stay moist and have direct contact with the skin for a longer period of time, like any sheet mask. Again, I didn’t note any particular effects from this essence apart from a bit of hydration but it was a useful one to experiment with and to utilise for this post!

Obviously, the whole DIY thing could be just too much hassle especially since you can get decent sheet masks at pretty good prices but if you like to experiment with DIY skin care, this might appeal to you.

Some notes:

1. It may have been easier with a more liquid substance rather than one that is thicker in texture like this.

2. Or with some of the thicker substances it may be advisable to put it on your face first, then cover with a slightly damp mask (soaked in toner or galactomyces essence perhaps).

3. It would be a good idea to chill the essence or whatever you are using in the fridge before hand for that extra refreshing sensation.

I will have to experiment further (with the 18 I have left!) and report back. I have an old book with DIY Skin care recipes somewhere that I will have to root out but some of the ideas I think look good are:

FOR DRY SKIN:
Mix coconut water with five drops of coconut oil and half a teaspoon of honey (manuka preferably). Coconut is hydrating and honey helps lock in the moisture.

FOR SENSITIVE SKIN:
Mix a tablespoon of aloe vera gel with a couple drops of olive oil and a chilled cup of organic green tea. The aloe vera and olive oil are good for dryness, while the green tea soothes the skin and calms redness.

FOR ACNE-PRONE SKIN:
Mix ¼ cup of witch hazel, ¾ cups of water, and a teaspoon of aloe vera gel. Witch hazel removes excess oil from the skin and minimizes pores and the aloe vera soothes irritation and redness.

It might also be nice to add a couple drops of skin friendly essential oils such as Tea Tree (great for oily and acne prone skin), Lavender (soothing), Neem (anti bacterial and good for acne prone skin) and Lemon (brightening and pigmentation).

Some other kitchen friendly ingredients that would be fun to try out:

– yogurt
– green tea powder (made up)
– pureed banana and milk
– milk and honey
– camomile tea
– peppermint tea (etc)
– egg
– lemon juice
– avocado
– apple cider vinegar

Maybe not ham though….

This whole post has gone a bit creepy again …..first suspicious looking white substances and the death rose (rosa calvaria) and now ham face!

To end on a much more pleasant note, I present some bunny babies from a very wonderful rescue that is close to my heart – Save a Bunny (based in the San Francisco Bay Area, California).  These dinky little munchkins will be available to adopt in the upcoming months for those in the area.  For everyone else, there are many wonderful rescues all over the world who would love to hear from you.  (The bun at the back is demonstrating what I should be doing right at this moment!)

MaskGenie – January Pouch Review

logo(source)

I couldn’t decide whether this post should be an unpouching or a full review and as anyone who knows me well could tell you, when faced with a dilemma I procrastinate…..BIG TIME!

One of the main targets (time wasters?) for the procrastination this time was my new found love for Buzzfeed video, and more undeniably,  ‘The Try Guys‘ (seriously, check them out – I promise hours upon hours of free time wasting and you may either laugh yourself into next week or fall slightly in love …..probably both!)

Anyway, enough of humorous men and my time management issues and onto MaskGenieMaskGenie has been set up by one of my fellow Memebox Addicts, Genie of Genie’s Favorite Products and came at a very opportune time, just as Memebox was closing up shop to international customers.

I can’t help myself but every time I type the name I think of this!:

I dream of jeannie gif(source)

That’s the TV programme ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ (1965-70).  Seriously, I’m not that old, it was repeated constantly in the 80’s on daytime TV!

MaskGenie is a monthly mask subscription service with a difference.  Similar to Memebox, you do not have to commit to months of a subscription but just buy a pouch as and when you want one. Genie provides pouches of 5 different masks (at $12) and 10 different masks (at $22) every month. The masks are all from reputable Asian brands and international shipping is included in the price. Details on how to order at the end of the post.

Genie will post a spoiler for each pouch before the payment deadline and then a full unpouching video (link at the end) when the pouches have been sent out so that you know what you are going to get! Some people watch because they have no self-restraint (me!) and some prefer a surprise when their pouch arrives! 🙂

She also has occasional themed pouches, such as the Oriental Beauty pouch for Chinese New Year (which unfortunately I missed as I did not have the money in time for the deadline – which I really regret as that one looked amazing and even had sweets!) and the current limited edition ’10 Days in the Wild’ pouch (see the end of the post for further details). The pouches are packaged in a drawstring bag each month and are posted securely in a robust envelope marked ‘fragile’ from Hong Kong. I have not had any issues with customs or the postal service.

fragile(source)

Onto the unpouching / review!

DSCN0815

MaskGenie includes a small slip of paper with a ‘thank you’ for purchasing and the link to the Facebook page for more information about the masks. To be honest, I would much rather have an information card with the names of the masks and some details about them rather than having to keep referring back to either the FB page or the Youtube unpouching. That isn’t always entirely helpful either as not all of them are featured on the FB page and having to find the right bit on a video is tiresome (especially when there are a few different types of one mask sent). This is a small gripe however and although I hope that this changes in the future, it is not a deal breaker.

I have used all of the masks for this pouch so far apart from one and I’ll fill in the review for that when I use it!

MASK No 1: MediHeal Mogongtox Soda Bubble Sheet (Korea)

DSCN0826

(Urgh, please excuse the photos! These were among some of the first photos that I took with this camera and hopefully I’ve improved a bit! It was also a very very dull day).

Description:
Blackhead Control, deep cleansing. Extracts from papaya, apples and mung beans clean dead skin and microscopic keratin from pores with bubbling. Fine bubbles are formed, developed by utilising the principles of carbonated water, which will provide a massaging sensation. It is a wash-off typed soda peeling sheet, not only it helps skin pore care but also allows tree leaves and Galactomyces ferment filtrate to clear skin. Suitable for: combination skin / oily and acne skin.

How to Use:
1. Apply mask pack on dried face after face washing.  Contents may stay at the bottom of the pouch, it is recommended to mix the contents by rubbing the pouch before use. (Use immediately after open).
2. Stay for 10 minutes and remove sheet when enough bubbles cover your face.
3. Softly massage face with remained bubbles and wash off with warm water.

Ingredients:
Water, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Apple Amino Acids, Dipropylene Glycol, Disiloxane, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Methyl Perfluorobutyl Ether, Methyl Perfluoroisobutyl Ether, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Propanediol, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Illicium Verum (Anise) Fruit Extract, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Phaseolus Radiatus Seed Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Castanea Sativa (Chestnut) Bark Extract, Diospyros Kaki leaf extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Flower Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Propolis Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Bark /Leaf/ Twig Extract, Carbonated Water (0.018 mg), Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Butylene Glycol, Milk Protein Extract.

My Thoughts:

This was actually the last mask that I tried from this pouch and it was definitely one of my favorites!

This mask was the spoiler for this pouch as Genie had tried this one out during a mask challenge and a lot of people really wanted to try it out!

When you open the pack there is no distinct smell at all and you find a dense, fairly thick black sheet mask. After unfolding, you will see that the mask only covers part of your face. The mask was full of essence and there was plenty left in the pouch. Having not read the instructions above (which were not in English on the package) I put some on the bits of my skin not covered by the mask and the rest I used afterwards.

You put it on like any other sheet mask and after half a minute or so it starts to bubble up with fine white bubbles. One thing that I questioned before I used it was whether the bubbles appeared on both sides of the mask as from the pictures that I had seen, it seemed that the bubbles were mainly on the side exposed to the air. I did find that they were mostly on that side but that the essence still soaked into the skin fine on the other side. You do get a slight tickling sensation (much less so than say the Elizavecca bubble clay mask) when the mask is on but I found that that was mainly in the places that I had put the essence directly onto the skin.

I don’t quite get why it is shaped like it is, other than for the sake of being different / quirky, and it would be great if they made one that covered the entire face. One thing that possibly may influence it, would be the potential for bubbles to drip down into the eyes if it was covering the forehead and that would NOT be good! The bubbles didn’t seem to go any further than the material though and definitely didn’t drip onto my neck / chest whilst they were doing their thing.

Disclaimer: I find it very difficult to take photographs with masks on, as I remove my contact lenses to use them and to be frank, I am as blind as a very blind bat! (-15 myopia). If I tried to take a picture in that state I would probably end up taking it of my feet or worse – boobs! As a consequence of this it is very unlikely that I will be showing off my visage a la sheet mask but luckily in this case Genie did the honours on her Facebook page.

Jan Mediheal soda(source)

It says to take off after 10 minutes and Genie made a point to emphasise this as she left it for 15 and had a slightly red face afterwards.  I, of course, got distracted and left it on for about 20 minutes (maybe longer!). Luckily I am not that sensitive and saw no redness but obviously if you have sensitive or a drier type of skin I would advise that you follow the instructions 😉

I then poured out the remaining essence in the pouch and massaged it into my skin like a foaming cleanser, washing it all off with warm water and then continuing my usual routine. I found that my skin looked clear and even and that my pores seemed a bit less noticeable.

I would definitely like to try this mask again and would buy it. It has good ingredients, is fun to use and showed some results.

8.5/10

This mask is available to buy in packs of 10 at Sasa (¥189.10 / £20.40) and Ebay ($24.92 / £16.80). It is also available as a single on Ebay ($3.99 / £2.70).

Ingredients: (were not on the package but these are thanks to Biancardi at CosDNA)
Purified Water, Glycerin, Ceratonia Siliqua Gum, 1,2-Hexanediol, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan), PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil,  Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Butylene Glycol, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract,  Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Caffeine, Agar, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Paeonia Suffruticosa (Peony) Root Extract, Niacinamide, Carnitine, Ethanol, Disodium EDTA, Isomerized Safflower Acid, Aniba Rosaeodora (Rosewood) Wood Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglutamic Acid, Coco-Glucoside, Garcinia Cambogia Fruit Extract, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract,  Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glaucine.

My Thoughts:

This is the one mask that I haven’t used yet. I am saving it for a special occasion!! I have another similar slimming patch that I was sent as a free sample with a Tester Korea order (bit of a weird one there!) so I may compare the two. Genie did use this mask as part of her challenge. She used it on her tummy and wore it overnight. She said that it felt a lot firmer the next day and that she and she started to go to the loo a lot!  It may possibly act as a diuretic and any weight that you lose may be water weight.

Jan Hippo(source)

This mask is widely available. For example, Rose Rose Shop (2100 Won / £1.25); Korea Depart ($13.10 / £8.85 for 5); Tester Korea (3500 Won / £2.10); Ebay ($40.60 / £27.52 for 10) and various Amazon sellers.

MASK No 3: Secret Key Snail & EGF Repairing Mask Pack (Korea)

DSCN0835

I received three of these masks in my Memebox Secret Key Value Set so I will copy the info from there.

Description:.

These masks have a dual function essence that has Whitening & Wrinkle diminishing properties including over 90% of yeast ferment filtrate.  They also contain filtered extract of snail and ingredients of EGF, which will make your damaged skin look much healthier and smoother. This concentrate type of essence will revive the healthy skin rhythm keeping the skin moist and with a clear tone.  This Essence with rich nutrition will help improve the condition of your skin and provide continuous moisturising effects after application so that your skin can remain healthy and hydrated. They have 7 intensive results of Hydration, Resilience, Brightening, Wrinkle diminishing, Soothing, Rearranging skin texture, and Anti-oxidation.

How long to use:
15-20 minutes.

Ingredients: (in Korean but the key ones are)
Snail Mucin (Chondrotin Sulfate), Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Albutin, Adenosine, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Viscum Album (Mistletoe) Leaf Extract , Grapefruit extract and Rosemary Leaf Extract. It also contains rhEGF, which helps skin firming.

My Thoughts:

This mask is one of the MaskGenie‘s favorites. It is her go-to for breakouts or that time of the month as it is very soothing and lessens redness and irritations.

It wasn’t one of my favorites I’m afraid. I know a lot of people rate this one but it really did nothing for me. I will however try again with the other three that I have and will update if my opinion changes.  My thoughts from the previous review:

Sheet masks are all pretty similar. It is rare to find either a really terrible or a really amazing one. This was one of the good but not amazing ones. The fit was a bit off (after all everyone’s face shape is different). There were huge gaps at either side of the nose and the mask was incredibly wide on me with excess folds at the cheeks (I don’t have a narrow face!).

The mask did not smell of much and had a decent amount of essence soaked into it. I invariably always fall asleep when I have a sheet mask on and I did when I tried this out, when I woke up some hours later it was bone dry and even the essence that is usually left in the pouch (there always seems to be plenty with a lot of brands) was non existent.
The mask left my skin feeling comfortable and clear but it was not luxurious or special in any way. I did compare it unfavourably with the Benton Snail Bee Mask, which has a similar function.

I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to buy this mask but would happily use it if it came in a set or subscription.

6/10

These can be bought at BNK for $5.40 for 3 with free shipping (£3.50).

MASK NO 4: Sister Diary Rose Hyaluronic Mask or Apple Polyphenol Platinum Mask (Taiwan / Japan)

My Thoughts:

I believe that these are in some way associated with the better known My Beauty Diary brand. They are supposed to be made to a special formula developed by a factory in Japan, that apparently adheres to the face better. The intended Rose variant ran out and some people will have got this Apple version instead. I am pleased with this situation 🙂

I have to say that I really loved this mask!! It had a gorgeous sweet apple scent (very slightly floral, not too strong) and the mask itself really felt like it hugged my face.

images(source)

…..but in a good way!

The mask was cooling and really refreshing. I fell asleep and when I woke up my face felt smooth, moisturised and my skin looked refined, bright and clear. It didn’t feel sticky like some masks can. There was still a lot of essence left in the pack, which I patted in for added nourishment.
This mask does contain alcohol, so may be best to avoid this one if you have dry, reactive skin or are at all sensitive to it.

I have a My Beauty Diary Apple Polyphenol mask coming in my long awaited Beauteque order (less said about that the better at the moment but I will be doing a post at some point) so I will be able to compare.

I would definitely buy this mask again and I wish that it was more widely available.

8.5/10

I could only find this mask in a few places and none of the ones that I had used before. It is available for S$1.29 (about 65p and about £2.20 with shipping) on Qoo10, and also on various Malaysian and Hong Kong based sites.

MASK No 5: NextBeau Aqua Collagen Piggy Mask or EGF Collagen Piggy Mask (Korea)

DSCN0838

Aww!!

This was again a choice of two masks from the same range. I got the EGF Pore Tightening version.

Description:

Provides moisture and nutrition to the skin by containing E.G.F, which promotes elasticity, Helps to keeps the skin moist. It is a essence pack that keep the skin vibrant and sleek.

How long to use:
20~30 minutes.

Ingredients:
Water, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Hyaluronic Acid, Betaine, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Collagen (1.000 ppm), Allantoin, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Methylparaben, Disodium EDTA, Polysorbate 20, Human Oligopeoptide-1 (60mg), Fragrance.

My Thoughts:

MaskGenie used the Aqua (Moisturising) version of this mask and thought it was pretty good for the price as an everyday mask.

Jan Nextbeau(source)

I think there are much better ones out there at a similar price point that produce superior results and are more satisfying to use. I honestly don’t remember that much about this mask other than it wasn’t a particularly good fit with the nose and mouth holes being too big and it had no discernible effect on my skin or pores. Hyaluronic Acid is fairly high up on the ingredients list, which implies a high level of moisturisation but it was not particularly noticeable to me.

Would I buy this mask? nope (I would of course use it if I got it elsewhere).

5/10

If you want to prove me wrong :),  this mask is available in the following places: Ebay ($2.79 / £1.88) or Rubyruby76 on Ebay ($14.03 / £9.51 for 10); Roserose shop (the same place!) at Qoo10 (S$14.40 / £7.00 for 10 inc shipping).

MASK No 6: Petitfée 98% Collagen & Co Q10 Hydro Gel Essence Eye Patch (Korea)

DSCN0830

Description:

Collagen and Co Q10 Hydrogel Essence Eye and spot patch infused with extracts of natural flower plants. Our products carry these plant essences directly to the skin to encourage health and reveal true and lasting beauty.  Hydro gel can absorb high amount of water, 98%, hydrating and moisturizing, re-hydrates skin and improves blood circulation.  Collagen is rich in amino acids and Co Q10 is a potent antioxidant and the mix of all these ingredients will help reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles and dark circles around the eyes, leaving the area bright and moisturized. They are to relieve eye fatigue pressure, eliminate eye lines, eye bags, dryness and roughness.

How long to use:
20-30 minutes.

Ingredients: in Korean unfortunately and I couldn’t find an English list.

My Thoughts:

MaskGenie initially did not try these out as she is not a fan of hydrogel masks (I love them!). But has done since the pouch has been sent out as she had one left over. She noted that they look like the yinyang symbol when you take the disc out from the packet!

Jan Petitfee eye

(source)

When you have opened the packet, you remove the film, and tear the two patches apart along the dotted line. As Genie noted, this patch is pretty dry. In fact, I did wonder whether I got a dud or it had dried out in transit as normally hydrogels are as wet and slippery as normal sheet masks … sometimes even more so. The fact that it is this dry (it feels almost silky rather than moist) caused problems for me with adherence. They are quite large and it was pretty difficult to get them into a comfortable position under my eyes and every time I moved it, it started to slip. I ended up having to lie down and stay very very still.

After the recommended time I really didn’t notice any difference to my under eye area. The area felt bone dry and the slight dark circles I had (I had been up for way too long) were exactly the same. These are apparently pretty expensive but I would say not really worth it. I have tried much better eye Korean patches and I would not buy these.

5/10

If you want to try these out they are available at Qoo10 (S$7.99 / £3.90) or a website I haven’t heard of before called Skincare Genies ($12.99 / £8.80 for 5). They also sell them in a pot (maybe more moist?) for $19.99 / £13.50 (for 60). There is also a ridiculous listing on Ebay for $119.99 for 5 (funnily enough by the same seller as the Qoo10 listing!)

MASK No 7: Etude House Green Tea Nose Pack (Korea)

DSCN0818

Description:

Easy-to-use nose sheets are formulated with green tea additives that purify pores of deep seated dirt and excess sebum. Powerful adhesive clings tightly on skin, binding whiteheads, blackheads and excess sebum ready to be lifted away to keep nose clear and smooth. Green tea extracts not only remove waste materials, blackheads, sebums and dead skin cells on the skin, but also tighten pores and relax skin. Use pore strip 2-3 times per week to minimize pore size and keep pores clear of dirt and debris.

How to use:
1. After cleansing, wet nose with lots of water, remove patch’s transparent film & press smooth side of patch onto center of nose.
2. After 10-15 minutes, once patch dries up, remove patch starting from outer edges.
3. Apply toner to nose after use.

Ingredients:
VP/VA Copolymer, Water, Silica, Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Polysorbate 60, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Chromium Oxide Greens, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Fragrance.

My Thoughts:

Etude House is a very well known Korean brand. It’s pretty cheap, cheerful and very cute and makes some very good products and some more average ones. I have used many different brands of nose strips over the years, from the classic (and relatively expensive) Bioré to your more bog standard 99p for 6 from the cheap beauty shop (probably Purederm!). They are all much of a muchness but where the ones I have used in the past and the Korean branded ones I have used more recently differ is that the Korean ones all seem to be coloured and scented rather than plain white and smelling of nothing.

171199111(source)

These little lovelies are a muted apple green and smell VERY strongly of something but definitely not green tea! I think it was more of a minty herbal, slightly smoky smell, quite artificial.  The smell continues as it is drying on your nose (close proximity!) unfortunately.

Ok, the results – just ok! I have had better. There was a bit on there but not much. I think part of the problem I have with these coloured nose strips is that it is much more difficult to see the gunk that they extract (too much information??) than on a plain white strip. The Black charcoal one that I have used previously was impossible, especially in the fairly dull light of a British winter. Of course, it could be that my skincare routine and relatively new Clarisonic are rendering this process obsolete? hmm

Anyway, a nose strip is a nose strip. Despite the claims they are never going to purify or tighten your pores. They will however hopefully suck out any lovely blackheads that happen to be lurking (temporarily … they always come back!).

Some tips from my experiences with these things to make the process more successful:

1. Use a mask that opens pores before hand. I recommend the Tony Moly Egg Pore Blackhead Steam Balm or a clay mask that does not also claim to tighten pores. Alternatively, holding a warm wet flannel on the area for a bit before will also help.

2. Really wet that nose area!

3. Press the strip down all over thoroughly.

4. Leave it until it is bone dry.

5. Pull it off slowly but surely. Firm and even is good, like ripping off a plaster.

6. Complete the routine with either a mask which will soothe and calm the area or a splash of cool water and a decent toner.

Would I buy these? No but they weren’t that bad as these things go.

6/10

These are widely available: from Etude House itself ($0.50 / 35p) or from Yes Style (£5.90 for 10). Tester Korea has them for 500 Won (30p).

MASK No 8: Lebelage Natural Essence Egg Mask (Korea)

DSCN0839

Description:

– Containing egg yolk extracts helps skin keep fresh. Egg tightens skin and provides nutrition.

– preserve moisturising and nourishment skin and help to manage a healthy, energetic and clean skin.

– this is an effect of enhancing the skin’s elasticity and moisture.

How long to use:
20-25 minutes.

Ingredients:
Purified Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Xanthan Gum, Calendula Officinalis Flower Water, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Water, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Extract, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Veronica Officinalis Extract, Melissa Officinalis (Lemon Balm) Leaf Extract, Achillea Millefolium (Yarrow) Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Egg Yolk Extract, Panthenol, Beta-Glucan, Disodium EDTA, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Phenoxythanol, Methylparaben, Polysorbate 80, Fragrance.

Yeah, couldn’t resist …. at least it isn’t another bunny 🙂 ♥

My Thoughts:

I had high hopes for this mask, knowing that eggs have been used in beauty for thousands of years. The All-China Women’s Federation tells of Zhang Lihua, a renowned beauty who lived around 600 B.C. and used a facial cream made from egg white and powdered vermilion. There isn’t much actual scientific evidence out there to back up the many claims and home remedies around but it has been shown that egg whites applied to the face and neck will tighten the skin, providing an instant temporary face lift.

This was another mask that I don’t really remember much about. The fit wasn’t good, with the eye and mouth holes being a bit too big so that I had to do a lot of adjusting before it sat right. The scent was slightly floral and a little bit ‘off’.  It reminded me somewhat of going into a hotel room on holiday for the first time (very specific I know!) – I presume because the floral fragrance smells a bit like a room cleaner / air freshener.
There was no noticeable results. My skin felt a bit sticky afterwards but that was about it.  Nope, I wouldn’t go for this one.

5/10

This mask has been available on Ebay but there are no current sales.

MASK No 9: Dermal Syn-ake Collagen Essence Mask or Collagen Essence Mask or Charcoal Collagen Essence Mask (Korea)

DSCN0825

I got the Syn-ake version.

Description:

1. It is a simple sheet type essence mask offering your skin direct nutrition, and after using it is possible for you to go out without washing your face.

2, Compared to other masks you can feel the difference immediately when using this mask only once and it includes a high quality mask sheet that sticks to your face very well.

3. It contains minute peptide ingredient “Syn-ake” (2.5 ppm) which is officially authorized by the Swiss Technology Award. The “Syn-ake” is similar with a real Snake venom and it spreads to your skin fast and keeps your skin smooth and elastic while preventing skin muscular from contraction.

4. Vitamin E and Hydrolysed Collagen (0.02%) – it provides your tired skin nutrition and makes your skin healthy and bright.

5. When you put mask sheet on your face, it makes you feel cool and keeps your tired skin elastic.

How Long to use:
15-20 minutes

Ingredients:
Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Beta-Glucan, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Polysorbate 80, Disodium EDTA, Xanthan Gum, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance.

My Thoughts:

‘It makes you feel cool ‘ …. ha, no. I don’t think that a sheet mask can ever do that!

I do of course realise that they mean cool, as in, cooled down. Just being facetious as usual. This mask makes a lot of promises and as I understand it, you are never going to see an immediate result from using syn-ake as it is meant to be a cumulative thing. So with that in mind, and not expecting miracles, this mask was ok.

The sheet itself was a decent thickness and there was plenty of the essence. There was no distinctive smell and this was one of the masks which has eye flaps, which you can choose either to fold down so it is like a normal mask (and you can see!) or have them up (and not see – obviously this is not a problem for me as I can’t see anyway!).

My skin felt a little bit moisturised but not as nice as my main stand by masks. This mask is good for a daily mask and I would try the others in the range but wouldn’t specially purchase it. I think you would have to use it pretty frequently to see any changes of the botox-lite variety!

6.5/10

This mask is available at Tester Korea for 500 Won (30p!).

MASK No 10: Sasatinnie Soya Milk Mask or Honey Peach Mask (Hong Kong)

DSCN0834

Description:

Suitable for all skin types. Energises and nourishes skin, effectively moisturises and brightens skin tone.

How long to use:
15-20 minutes

Ingredients:
Aqua, Butylene Glycol, Prunus Persica (Peach) Leaf Extract, Niacinamide, Hydroxethyl Urea, Centella Asiatica (Hydrocotyl) Extract, Panax Ginseng (Ginseng) Root Extract, Hydrolyzed Yeast Protein, Triethanolamine, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol, Lactic Acid, Allantoin, Carbomer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Hyaluronic Acid, Methylparaben, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Parfum, Methylisothiazolinone.

My Thoughts:

Sasa is an retail store which is really popular and famous in Hong Kong. Genie wanted to include a mask made by them as it is rare to find a mask made in HK because of the high salaries and standard of living, which make production costs generally higher. I was thinking perhaps Sasa is equivalent to our Boots here? High Street but not necessarily cheap / cheap.

The first thing that you notice about this mask is the smell – it is very strong! I wouldn’t quite describe it as fresh peach. It is more of a concentrated peach juice or a peach jelly sweet perhaps! The mask has plenty of rich, milky, slightly sticky essence and fits pretty well.

This mask really moisturised and hydrated my skin and my face seemed a lot brighter and clearer after use. I found this one relaxing and a pleasure to use.

Yes, I would buy this one!

8/10

This is available directly from the Sasa website at $8.80 (£6) for 10, plus shipping. Also available on Amazon at £21.99 plus £4.99 shipping.

Conclusion

This first pouch from the MaskGenie was a bit hit and miss for me but I do love that about masks. You never know whether they are for you until you try them and it is worth trying some so-so masks to find some that you truly enjoy.  They are generally fairly cheap so it isn’t like buying a £90 serum and finding you don’t like it!

This was a good wide selection of masks, personally chosen by Genie and you can see the process here in her unpouching Youtube video.

I had no bad reactions and I would use all of them again if I was gifted them or got them in a box / pouch. I went ahead and ordered the February Pouch (upcoming post) and the March Pouch (awaiting!).

Out of 9 masks that I have tried I would definitely want to stock up on 3.

Luckily, that may become easier as Genie is working on a MaskGenie website which will sell the pouches, as well as some masks that have been in previous pouches that maybe hard for us to get our hands on without paying a lot of money for shipping. I put in a vote for my favorite 3 from this pouch right now! 🙂

I also hope that some of the masks from the Oriental pouch that I missed out on will be available to buy separately.  In anticipation……

Bunnies lunar new year
The website will make it easier for people to order the pouches as well, as they will no longer need to e-mail or message Genie each month, and can just press the icon on the new website. She will still continue to automatically invoice every month however.

At the moment though the process for ordering is as follows:

There are currently two options for the monthly pouches: US$22 for 10 different masks, US$12 for 5 different masks. That price includes all international shipping (refreshing, I know!)

If you would like to order, please send an e-mail to maskgenie@gmail.com with which set you’d like to order (10set or 5set), and please provide your PayPal address so she can send you an invoice.  All pouches are purchased separately, but if you would like to be invoiced automatically each month, please let them know.

At the moment of posting the April pouch is still available (Spoiler: One of the new My Beauty Diary Black Masks!,  Deadline: 27/03/2015) and there may be some Limited Edition 10 Days In The Wild pouches left (animal masks but be quick!!)

10 days in the wild pouch(source)

I know this post is extremely long (understatement of the year!) so I was wondering what you think – would it be better to post a quick unpouching at the time of receipt and then review the masks as and when?

or perhaps it would be better to split the review into two ‘5 mask’ smaller ones?

Let me know what you would prefer and any ideas, requests, complaints are always welcome (some of those are more welcome than others of course!).

and with that I bid you adieu…..

NB. All prices and availability correct at time of posting. These opinions are my own, not sponsored, often brutally honest and may include naughty words and gratuitous bunny pictures 🙂

Memebox – Skin Factory Value Set

This is going to be a pretty short one as Memebox has removed all trace of this box from their website and I (rather stupidly) did not save the information beforehand!   I ordered this at the same time as the Detox & Renew, Elizavecca set and Secret Key Set – just before Meme broke up with the world. I got this box essentially for one product but the rest aren’t bad either! The box cost $37 shipped (£24 approx) and I have no idea what the Memevalue was for the contents but I will link to places to buy the products at undoubtedly cheaper prices than that Memevalue anyway. $24 is very good value though considering the usual online price of the main item.

The Brand

Skinfactory is a trusted Korean Brand which started as a cosmetics brand founded by a group of medical specialists (from Seoul National University) to offer pure & natural skincare products which emphasize the well-being & balance of the skin for both man & woman of all skin types.

1(Source)

Their products include cleanser, toner, essence, serum and special cellulose cotton facial masks  Additionally, all Skinfactory products have completed clinical testing through the Hushu Clinic, with which they collaborate.  Hushu is a well-known International Dermatology Clinic.  All their products are fragrance-free, pigment-free, preservative-free, alcohol-free and mineral oil-free and are dermatologist tested.   They are a socially responsible company, committed to limiting the impact of its actions and products on the environment and only the best ingredients from nature are used to make their products.

The company is owned by Beauty Finest, which also looks after Skin Watchers, Chamos Acaci, Yadah Korea (which I really like – see Detox and Renew review) and Hermippe. The brand also has it’s own website with content in English at www.skinfactorys.kr

My Thoughts

This definitely appeals to my inherently lazy side! I am saving these for the summer when I won’t feel like layering many products and hopefully having much more fun outdoorsy things to do, it will also save time in the morning. They are also meant to be stored in the fridge and at the moment that may result in the damn thing freezing to my face if I tried to use them in my bedroom first thing in the morning! This is my usual morning routine:

getting up(Source)

Yep, I like sleep! I would hibernate if I could….. The other reason that I wanted to try these is that they have become a Memebox Addicts holy grail (oh no, not that again!).

They were in a previous mask box and a LOT of people like these very much, they have shown excellent results with many different people (presumably with differing skin types) and when a product gains that sort of a following I would be pretty stupid not to want to try it. They have been comments on how wonderful their skin looks after using, that their skin looks ‘brighter, firmer and more moisturised’, that they would ‘buy them again and again’, that it acts like a primer and it makes makeup go on much easier and that the speed of use is a major plus point (yes, I put opinions in my spreadsheet wishlist – I am a beauty nerd!).

The sheets come in a plastic jar with a plastic lid and the inside is reminiscent of a tuna or coke can with a metallic pull tab. There are tweezers provided to pick up the little sheets of heaven (and that can apparently be reused as, well, tweezers afterwards). The sheets themselves are round and have a pocket where you insert your fingers so that you can use them as a massaging pad, without getting your fingers all in the goodness on the surface. The pads have different surfaces on either side; a dotted side for exfoliation and a smoother side for patting the remaining essence in afterwards. There is an instruction leaflet inside showing the correct method of massage to stimulate your ‘blood spots’, as specified in Korean Traditional Medicine. Similar concept to acupressure I would think.

3

4(Source)

With the known results and my built in laziness these pads are a winner. They are more expensive than a lot of the other Korean products I have been using (especially for only 20 uses)  but that may be due to the very long and impressive ingredients list and to be honest, I don’t mind paying a bit more if it is something I know will work. Can’t wait to try them and I will report back when I do! The company also makes a version of these pads for men (Homme) and a Night time version (Platinum Rose Wine). These cost $20.23 from Wishtrend, not including shipping (£13.10 approx), which isn’t too bad. They also take 15% off of you buy this with one of the other two.

My Thoughts

This is a LOT of fun! There was a similar product by a different brand called Skinaz in a box that I missed last year and I really wanted to get my hands on one to try. When I saw that the 7 Second Sheets came with one of these it really made my mind up. I wasn’t too sure about the colour but i thought, at least I can try the concept and see if it works for me. Here are some swatches (please excuse the quality of photographs, I was finding it very difficult to focus whilst holding the camera in the other hand!):

DSCN0760

It is pretty subtle and a nice cool toned pink colour. I haven’t got round to trying this on my actual lips yet as I am usually in a rush in the morning and haven’t really got the time to be waiting 10 minutes for my lips to dry… in actuality, I could… but that would mean getting out of bed earlier and I refer you to the cartoon above! I will have a go soon though and I plan to try the Secret Key Lipstick over the top for moisture since they are so similar in tone. Here is another couple of peoples lips for your delectation:

I will review these in more depth as I use them but I must say that they look pretty impressive and a bit different to the usual sheet masks that I have been using. I’m not sure whether the essence is in a separate pocket like some others that I have seen (it doesn’t seem like it to me). It looks like you just access the essence that is always remaining in the pouch first, then put the mask on top.

I’m sure the blurb on the Memebox website said something about using one a day in a specific order but since I no longer have access to that information I will try and see what other info I can find and update this as soon as I can. We shall see! These are also all available at Wishtrend and are $4.00 each (approx £2.60). There are also other versions available – a Real Honey Moisturising Ampoule Mask, a Volcanic Ash Black 3D Ampoule Mask (that one sounds interesting!), a Real Shiny Pearl Ampoule Mask and a Silky Dream Cream Sheet Mask.

Conclusion

This box is a bit of a weird one. It seems a bit sparse and it mainly centred around the HG item that everyone already knows about. It seems like they just threw in a few other bits to make up the difference – but, to be honest, when those other bits are some great looking sheet masks and a fun lip tint then that is not a problem. It is definitely my least favorite of the three Value sets that I got in that order but that may change as and when I use the items. I also ordered a Sally’s Box Mask Value Set, just after the closure and I will be doing that next along with the promised MaskGenie pouches. Did you get this box? What do you think about it?

Till next time 😉

The blurb:

‘SECRETKEY is back & this time, it’s decked out in Valentine’s Day colors – red & pink!’

This is the second version of a Secret Key Value Set that they did (I think) and this one was apparently themed around the colours of Valentines Day (or perhaps more romantically and less commercially, also the colours of the marriage equality symbol!).

marriage-equality-meme-450x448

As this was likely to be the only ‘Valentine’ I would get this year I decided to treat myself, having already tried one of the products before and really enjoyed it. This box cost $35 including shipping (£22.70 approx) and contained 6 products (3 sheet masks count as one) at a Memevalue of $156 (£101.10 approx) ….not at all bad, but obviously the products can be found cheaper elsewhere as usual.

The Brand

After a bit of judicious googling I found the Secret Key website, which is very lovely and in keeping with their ethos of ‘cosmetics which have nature in‘.

They promise to – always pursue healthy beauty, to always supply customers with high quality products at a reasonable price, use natural and environmentally friendly ingredients which can be used safely for every skin type and they will continuously support the environment campaign to leave a clean and beautiful environment for our descendants.

That sounds pretty damn good to me!

DSCN0734

Ingredients: in Korean but the key ones are Niacinamide, Adenosine, Beta Glucan, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Extract of Salmon egg, Blueberry, Orange, Sweet Almond Fruit, Broccoli and Pumpkin.

My Thoughts

I managed to get a pot of this in a sale in the UK Meme Facebook Group last year and finished it a few weeks ago. This Jelly was the main reason that I bought this box. It comes in a heavy bottomed glass jar with a little spatula (although I did not get the spatula last time, that was not a problem as I used it fairly quickly and always with clean hands). It was a bit difficult to extract with your fingers though, due to the jelly like wobbly texture, so I would advise using the spatula!

When you warm it in your hands prior to applying, the gel turns into more of a water based essence texture and applies to your skin easily and quickly.

I really enjoyed using this. It isn’t wonderful for underneath makeup on skin as oily as mine, as although it is not greasy at all it does make your skin shine (the desired look for a Korean girl I understand) so I used it as my daily moisturiser on days when I wouldn’t be wearing makeup (most of the week at the moment) and it functioned perfectly well in that capacity.

What I absolutely loved about this product was the texture and cooling feeling that it gave to my skin. It is just an absolute delight to use. It absorbed fast and well and as I said, did not feel at all greasy (I hate that!). I am not opening this one yet as I am going to save it for the summer due to the aforementioned cooling refreshing ability but this is the promotional picture of the texture and look of the gel cream.

web 5

web 6(Source)

The gel cream smells a little bit floral but only mildly to me. I really missed this one when I finished it and I think that it contributed very well to the more polished, tightened appearance of my skin over the past few months. I don’t really have many wrinkles for it to try out those claims on but I definitely did not see any new ones appearing and my skin felt moisturised and hydrated at all times. It may not be moisturising enough for those with drier, more dehydrated skins and you may need additional moisture if using this.

This product is widely available in the usual places at very good prices. Beauty Net Korea / f2plus1 (their ebay account) at the best price about $14.99 (£9.70) with free postage; Korea Depart and Tester Korea,

2. Super Plumping Gel Oil
Full Size Product: 30ml ($42 / £27.25)
Super Plumping Gel Oil has a three layer system – 1st layer: refreshing gel, 2nd layer: hydrating moisture lock, 3rd layer: nourishing oil – to combat dryness and signs of aging.
The refreshing gel transforms into a hydrating liquid upon contact and turns into a non-sticky oil texture to better absorb into the skin.  The unique formula is made with salmon egg extract, blueberry, orange and to provide 24 hour hydration, anti-aging benefits, skin brightening and skin resiliency. It is a skin friendly product for sensitive skin.

How to use: After facial wash, apply appropriate amount on skin and spread gently.
Using right after facial wash: Lightweight instant moisturising
After essence or mixed with cream: prolonged deep moisturising and nourishing
Mixed with basic makeup cosmetics: if mixed with BB cream or foundation, it enhances adherence and moisturising. To bed, you can apply it not only on the face, but also on the neck.

DSCN0741

Ingredients: in Korean but the key ones are Niacinamide, Adenosine, Beta Glucan, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Extract of Salmon egg, Blueberry, Orange, Sweet Almond Fruit, Broccoli and Pumpkin.

My Thoughts

I am intrigued to see how this differs to the Jelly. As far as I can tell, the main difference will be the delivery mechanism / the texture – rather than from gel to watery essence, this one goes from gel to oil. That sounds to me like it will be richer and more moisturising, perhaps one for the night time in the summer rather than the day … for me at least. I would not be thinking about mixing it with a BB or foundation as they suggest, that would be a recipe for a very shiny face indeed! Flashbacks to high school?

57415069
I think I will try the second suggestion, after essence and probably before my cream but not every night – we shall see and I may be back with an update!

I do very much enjoy facial oils. Despite having oily skin, I know that they can often really suit my skin and give me a glow that I don’t get from bog standard moisturising creams. I am enjoying the one by IOPE at the moment and have already bought a back up of that one.

This is what it looks like in action (not my hand .. mines a hell of a lot paler than that!):

test

Yeah, I’m not going to be throwing confetti at my face to see if it sticks either 😉

This is available to buy from Beauty Net Korea at $13.41 (£8.70) with free shipping; f2plus1 and Korea Depart.

3. Starting Treatment Eye Cream
Full size product: 30g ($26.40/ £17.10)
This is a special and concentrated treatment for the weak eye area. It helps the sensitive skin around the eye to be elastic and revitalised, providing plentiful moisture to the area and creating a moisture barrier that helps the skin be moist all of the time. It also has a double functioning component: anti wrinkle and whitening. It will also calm down irritated and exhausted skin around the eyes. It is very suitable for sensitive and weak skin as it contains no stimulating ingredients.

How to use: Release appropriate amount onto the skin and and pat until absorbed.

DSCN0749
Ingredients (They were on the inside of the box!!):
Water, Glycerin, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Niacinamide, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose, Distearate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Beeswax, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Acrylates / C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Stearic Acid, Butyrosperum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Adenosine, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Acanthopanax Senticosus (Eleuthero) Root Extract, rh-Oligopeptide-1, Lecithin, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Ceramide 3, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Triethanolamine, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance.

My Thoughts

I am very happy to get an eye treatment with galactomyces as a main ingredient. I have another in my stash by Purebess to use as well and it will be interesting to compare the two. I am using the IOPE eye cream at the moment, which I am very much enjoying – much more visible results than the Pro You one I was using before it.

I therefore won’t be opening this for a while as I am aware of the speeded up expiry once a product is opened. The texture of the cream looks like this – very gel cream like, nice and light:

web 8(Source)

This is available to buy at Beauty Net Korea for $7.20 (£4,70) with shipping included and the other usual suspects (but for more money!).

4. Berry Milk Hand Cream
Full Size Product: 60ml ($8.40 / £5.40 approx)
This is a hand cream made with donkey milk and 3 different kinds of berries, which moisturise and smooth the skin and nails. It also contains hyaluronic acid which creates a moisture protection layer, keeping skin healthy and moisturised and collagen which improves the moisture levels and skin elasticity as well as being smoothing at the same time. It is meant to penetrate deep into the skin without leaving it feeling heavy or sticky.

How to use: After washing hands or whenever feeling dry, release appropriate amount on the back of hands, nails and fingers. It is recommended to apply whenever the hands are feeling dry.

DSCN0745
Ingredients:
in Korean, but the important components are Donkey Milk, Hyaluronic Acid, Water Soluble Collagen, Raspberry, Blueberry and Blackberry.

My Thoughts

The blurb on the front is in English – Donkey Milk is rich in essential fatty acids, minerals and other nutrients (and) has the most similar structure to human breast milk, and it’s active ingredients quickly and gently permeate through the skin, leaving it silky soft, smooth and moisturised without irritating the sensitive or dry skin. It also protects the skin by maintaining the balance between moisture and oil in the skin, keeping it soft, smooth and supple all day long.

A demonstration on how to milk a donkey, in case you hadn’t guessed:

I have traditionally really badly neglected my hands. From years rooting around in the soil, dust and mud (Archaeology) to a desk job and just never really having the time or inclination, I have pretty much left them to get on with it themselves. I gave up wearing nail varnish years back, mainly because it never stayed on anyway so there wasn’t any point.

When I discovered Memebox, I also rediscovered the joy of pampering a much neglected part of my body. One of my boxes last year, From Jeju, had the most wondrous hand cream in it. It smelt lovely and sank in like a dream. Unfortunately all dreams must come to an end, right? (Right? Memebox??). I finished the tube…….

Luckily, I can obtain this miraculous cream online but in the meanwhile I am trying out other products to discover whether that one was a fluke or whether my hands were just crying out for moisture from any source. So far my experiments have been a failure … that one cream is still the holy grail …..but now I have this one to try, could it be??

5. Sweet Glam Tint Glow (Fuschia / Pussia Purple)
Full Size: 3.5g ($33.60 / £21.80)
This is a lipstick that moisturises like a lipbalm, due to it containing Lanolin oil which has a strong moisturising effect. It provides a natural and soft colour, that lasts a long time without stickiness. It forms a protective film on the lips and provides a glossy natural effect. It can be layered for a stronger look or applied once for a slight glow.

How to Use: Apply to lips as needed. Can be used under, or in place of lipstick or lip gloss.

DSCN0764

DSCN0766

My Thoughts

It looks very vibrant in the photograph but is actually a sheer pretty glossy purple-y pink in real life.  I have worn this and it was very easy to wear, felt comfortable and stayed moist. The colour was a little too pale for my lips though, however many coats I applied. This is the theory:

web 12
and this is the colour selection available – I think I would have preferred the Burgundy shade for my colouring, but at least it wasn’t the orange one!.

web 13
I may apply it over a tint next time (like the Skin Factory one I will review next perhaps?) just to give it a bit of a boost.

This is a swatch on my skin (very pale!), with the leftover tint from the Skin Factory tattoo tint above (please ignore .. they are pretty similar though!):

DSCN0769
The full range is available at BNK (Beauty Net Korea) for $9 each inc shipping (£5.80 approx).

6. Snail + EGF Repairing Mask Pack x 3
Full Size Product: 20g each ($7.20 for 3 / £4.70)
Tightening / Brightening / Moisturising / Restoring / Soothing.

How to use: After washing face and applying toner, open the pouch and unfold the mask gently. (For sensitive skin test it on the back of your hand first before applying on the face), Place the mask onto the face and adjust to fit the shape of your face. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. After removal, tap the rest of the essence into the skin gently to make sure it is all absorbed properly.

DSCN0752
Ingredients:
in Korean but the key ones are Snail Mucin (Chondrotin Sulfate), Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Albutin, Adenosine, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Viscum Album (Mistletoe) Leaf Extract , Grapefruit extract and Rosemary Leaf Extract. It also contains rhEGF, which helps skin firming.

My Thoughts

I have actually tried one of these masks as I also received one just before this in a new mask subscription pouch by the very wonderful MaskGenie. This mask was one of 10 included in the January subscription pouch (I also have the Feb), both of which I will be writing up very soon (and promise to be a lot quicker with the March one!).

Having said that, I am happy to have another three as I use masks at least a few times a week and it is great to have some standard useful ones of different types for when your skin has different needs.

These can be bought at BNK for $5.40 for 3 with free shipping (£3.50).

7. Teeny tiny Starting Treatment Essence 7ml
Full Size Product: 155ml (not sure on full retail or Meme price)
This is another Galactomyces based essence, similar to the ones I have mentioned before in my previous post on the Elizavecca Value Set. I think that this one is a bit different in that it is not solely a Galactomyces essence but contains other goodies as well. It contains the yeast proteins at 50% and also Vitamins B1, B2, Niacin and Folic Acid. It is supposed to have these advantages: anti wrinkle, whitening, elasticity, soothing, moisturising, sebum control and keeping the skins texture trim (firm?). Contains no parabens, mineral oil, benzophenone, alcohol, animal oil, artificial colour or artificial fragrance.

How to use: As the first step in skin care after cleansing. Apply onto a cotton pad or hands and then to your face, patting softly and evenly.

DSCN0732
Ingredients:
in Korean, key ones are Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate, Albutin, Adenosine, Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Viscum Album (Mistletoe) Leaf Extract , Grapefruit extract, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Chamomile Extract, Green Tea Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Witch Hazel Extract,  Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Ground Cherry Fruit Extract, Chopi Tree (Japanese Pepper Tree) Fruit Extract.

My Thoughts

I do like getting surprises, however diddy. This little bottle will contain at least a few applications though and will be very useful when I write a short comparison post for various types of Galactomyces based essences. It is also amazingly cute 🙂

The full size is available at BNK for $16.11 inc shipping (£10.40 approx).

Conclusion

I really like this box and will use everything in it. The lipstick may need to be used on top of something else but I am interested in checking out the darker colour. It was a well put together selection of products but I feel a bit like the red/pink theme was just a bit arbitrary and it could have just have been a ‘Season 2’ box like the Elizavecca  and perhaps had a bit of variation in the cream / oil being from different ranges. Having said that, I am pleased that they didn’t as these are the ones that I know suit my skin so far.

Any questions or comments about this box or any other please don’t hesitate to ask, Skin Factory next!

……and remember to watch out for those vicious bunnies on the route to finding your holy grail products…..

Memebox – Elizavecca Skincare Set Season 2

1

As well as mystery, naked and theme boxes (is it just me or does that sound like the beginnings of a spectacular party??),  Memebox more recently began to curate ‘Value’ sets. These sets were based around one brand (a bit like the old Brand boxes) and were ‘naked’, that is to say that the contents were exposed at the very start, as in the screen grab above. This lot of goodies would set you back $43 (£28 approx) with free shipping (although that had been reduced and otherwise changed at times so you needed to keep your eye on it). That is 4 items for a Memevalue of $118 (£76.80 approx).

I ordered this along with some other ‘Value’ sets and the Detox & Renew box at the end of January just before the closure announcement was made. I have only managed to try one product so far but I am extremely happy with this box and honestly wish I had got more than one. Let’s see why:

DSCN0773

DSCN0775

4 lovely items! As you may have guessed they are all from the brand ELIZAVECCA.  I really, really like this brand. I have been using their Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask for a good few months now and have purchased quite a few (ahem ….4) backups from the Meme Shop and also from complete fools who have allowed me to swap or buy one from them on Facebook (not really, everyone likes different things!)

The Brand

I can’t find out too much about the brand and it’s general philosophy as unfortunately I don’t read Korean but the first thing that struck me about Elizavecca was the wonderful packaging and general sense of whimsy in the graphics on said packaging. Their trademarks are an incredibly cute pig and a wonderfully cool rabbit (never would have guessed I’d like that, eh?). Whilst the bunny stays effortlessly hip and the same on all the packaging, the little piggy changes his/her dress and circumstances dependent on what the product he is advertising is. This is the header from their website showing the bun and the plain pig, about to go do his thing with all their wonderful products:

web(Source)

There have been a number of the products in boxes over the last year, as well as the Bubble pack, I also have the Green Piggy Collagen Jella Pack pig mask to try (of which I got a very similar mask in the Winter Essentials Mask box but by a different brand). They seem to have been one of Memebox’s stronger brand partnerships and if the Korean warehouse had continued I’m sure we would have continued to see more of their products popping up in boxes.

Even though the website above is in Korean, you can see that there is a vast range that would be fascinating to try. I particularly like the look of the Milky Wear Salicyl Cream (an exfoliating salicylic acid cream), which looks like it would work wonders on all those icky blackheads and open pores; the Vitamin C 21% Ample Mask (a high concentration Vit C cream mask), this looks so sunny, juicy and healthy – the bunny sunglasses are needed with this one; the Milky Piggy Glutinous Mask (a snail 80% ampoule mask), anything snail is good by me and this has anti wrinkle and whitening functions; and many more (there is a Mayu horse oil cream, hydrogel and fancy sheet masks (my absolute favorites),  pore masks and various serums and essences. I want to try the whole range! I foresee some Tester Korea requests in my future! There are various websites that already stock some of these items and I will list those at the end of the post.

The box

Let’s start with the absolute winner. (Retail prices given are from the Elizavecca website as Meme did not provide a Memevalue for the individual products).

1. Water Coating Aqua Brightening Mask
Full Size Product: 100ml (38,000 Won / £22.40 approx)
Known as the “flight attendant” mask , this facial treatment is perfect for those that are experiencing dull, weather skin due to constant switching between central heating and harsh winds. This treatment uses the extreme hydration and anti-ageing active technologies as it moisturises, restores, replenishes and brightens the skin. Active collagen boosts and locks in moisture for a dewy and youthful result while baobab water and bamboo water brightens the complexion and leaves skin with an instant silky, soft and supple feel. This miracle facial treatment energises the skin, giving you a healthy looking, glowing complexion.

How to use: On cleansed skin, evenly apply the treatment all over the skin. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse.

My Thoughts

Although this product was well sealed when it arrived I think that the changes in temperatures or pressure made the cream expand as when I took off the cellophane wrapping on the pot it was very oily inside and all around the top of the jar and opening, as if it had separated a bit and some product had squeezed out under the wrap. This wasn’t a problem and probably hardly any was lost – just a heads up if you are ordering one that ships from Korea internationally. I just wiped it down and rubbed the excess on my hands.

This particular piggy graphic is a deep sea scuba diver with his helmet filled with water (presumably to represent the protective coating layer of hydration that this product provides).
He is standing next to some buried treasure ……and since there are bubbles coming out of it I going to presume that he has found a wondrous stash of the bubble clay mask! This mask itself smells lightly floral (but not too much for me and I am fairly sensitive to strong floral scents …as in I detest them!) and is a watery gel cream, that is marvellously cooling and refreshing on the skin. It comes with a little spatula in the protective lid.

DSCN0952

DSCN0954

I have used it twice so far both times after using the Bubble Clay Mask to take off my make up (having already removed my eye make up).  I have then put a generous layer of this all over and enjoyed. The first time I fell asleep (a common occurrence and it did no harm) but both times I left it on much much than the allotted 15-20 minutes. It hasn’t even really started to absorb by then to be honest.  It could even be used as a sleep pack but I think that the consistency is such that it would not penetrate a moisturising cream beneath it very well.

DSCN0955

DSCN0958

When I finally washed it off (after it had totally absorbed)  my skin felt so soft and silky, almost like satin, velvety …. an entire haberdashery in fact!
I followed it up with my usual night time routine from serum onwards and that seemed to work fine. The next day my skin looked rested, glowing, bright and even in tone. I look forward to further uses and will definitely replace this when I have used a bit more (I need back ups to match my bubble mask stash!!). It would be interesting to try the other masks / creams in the range and compare the effects.

2. 100% Galactomyces Essence
Full Size Product: 50ml (19,000 Won / £11.10 approx)

This 100% Galactomyces infused ampoule instantly revives dull skin and provides intense hydrating and skin repairing benefits to the skin. One use softens and evens the skin texture to give a natural glow and youthful radiance.

How to use: Using the spoid, apply to clean skin and massage. Use as a substitute for serums and essences. Mix with moisturisers and creams for maximum effects of both the ampoule and moisturisers / cream.

DSCN0793
Ingredients: in Korean ….presumably 100% Galactomyces 🙂

My Thoughts

I had never really considered the word ‘spoid’ before discovering Korean skincare.  I have no idea whether it is used in the West for the same purpose. In fact it isn’t actually a word, at least not one that any dictionary (including the urban one which has altogether another meaning for it) would recognise. It seems to be solely used in the skincare and medical fields.

I still prefer ‘sucky thing’, or maybe ‘pipette’ if I have to be serious (which is never…).

So, What are Galactomyces?

glactonew100sg(Source)

And in plain English (not being too cheeky – I can’t read Korean at all so they are doing far better than me!),  Galactomyces ferment filtrate is a kind of fungi or yeast (also sometimes known as Leaven) and is an offshoot of the fermentation process when making alcoholic beverages (yum!).
The people making the alcohol discovered that they had very smooth, young looking hands after working with the product.  It was then discovered to be very rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids under further study.

It is classified as a humectant (which is a hygroscopic substance used to keep things moist; it is the opposite of a desiccant. Thanks wiki).

The effects and benefits include:

  • Increased moisture and hydration to skin for a long period of time
  • Absorbs deeply and quickly into skin
  • Helps control our skin’s PH balance
  • Brightens skin
  • Creates clear and vibrant skin
  • Effective for ageing skin; makes skin elastic
  • Naturally remove dead skin cells, resulting in softer, smoother, glossier skin
  • Relieves and calms skin irritation and stress
  • Prevent and improve skin damage
  • Provides vitality to fatigued skin
  • It has been proven in studies that that ‘GFF-containing moisturizers help protect the skin against damage…. such as due to dryness or environmental stress …..and also having antioxidant effects.’

It also does not contain any nasties:

glactonew2(Source)

So if anyone knows any non-irritating and available children …………nope, that even sounds wrong in my head!

DSCN0801
This is 100% Galactomyces, as is the one by the brand Purebess that I have been using since before Christmas.
I believe that some other well known brands contain much less – even very well known and expensive ones.  I did see one that claimed ‘even more than 100%’!! but I think that may have been a fib.  I also have a version by Secret Key to try (that came in another value set) and I will maybe get some more as well to do a thorough comparison.

The blurb says to ‘Use as a substitute for serums and essences’, but I must admit that I use the Purebess version as one in a multitude of steps (the K Beauty routine, to be posted about soon).
I have been using it as a second toner of sorts.  I cleanse (sometimes twice), apply a more stringent toner on a cotton pad and then pat this into my skin until absorbed and then continue on with my essence, serum and moisturiser.  I have oily skin ….this has not been too much for it.  Probably best to play around and see what works best for you.

Since starting using a Galactomyces product my skin has vastly improved, mainly in tone and clarity. I look more alive and vibrant, refined.  Whether it is this, another product that I have been using or (most likely) a combination of factors, I don’t know, but it will be very interesting to experiment with different brands to see if I notice a difference …..watch this space!

3. Hyaluronic Acid Serum 100%
Full Size Product: 150ml (38,000 Won / £22.10 approx)
This hyaluronic serum rapidly rescues skin from the visible signs of ageing and replenished youthful volume from the inside out and stimulates the skin’s natural production of hyaluronic acid for lasting results, and protects the skin from environmental damage. Use to smooth away facial wrinkles and lines, correct ageing skin, restore skin suppleness, and prevent the formation of new lines and wrinkles.

How to use: Apply to clean dry face after cleansing. Take a dime sized amount and massage into the skin. Pat gently until fully absorbed.

DSCN0778
Ingredients:
also in Korean, again presumably 100% Hyaluronic Acid

My Thoughts

This is one damn huge bottle!! It is really heavy, brushed glass with a shiny silver lid and no sign of the piggy! Bunny makes a small appearance on the logo. I don’t think I have ever seen a serum at this size before, this will take a while to use up! As I have other serums open at the moment I will not be opening this but the consistency seems fairly watery as far as I can tell, which is perfect to use after my essence and before a thicker consistency ampoule, lotion or cream.

So, What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a gel-like water holding molecule that is the space filler and cushioning agent in all mammals.  HA cushions joints, nerves, hydrates skin and hair, and fills the eye.  Although originally discovered in 1934 by Karl Meyer, HA gained momentum only after a visit by a reporter to a Japanese village of Yuzuri Hara to find out why both men and women in their 80’s and 90’s had smooth wrinkle free skin, flexible joints, full heads of hair and activity levels that defied their age.  This was eventually found to be related to oestrogen-like molecules in their diet from soya and tofu, which sent signals to the cells to make more hyaluronic acid.

Our bodies roughly contain 15 grams of HA and it is found in virtually every part of the body.  With such a widespread occurrence, it is logical that HA also has multiple functions.   Scientific studies have shown that HA improves skin hydration, stimulates production of collagen in skin, works as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger, maintains skin elasticity, cushions joints and nerve tissues, has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity and maintains the fluid in the eye tissues, which may help to protect against numerous possible eye concerns.

Decreasing levels of hyaluronic acid are known to accompany the ageing process and it is estimated that by the time we reach our mid-40’s, the synthesis of HA is roughly half that required by the body.

The benefits specifically for the skin are:

  • Hyaluronic acid helps to retain over a 1000 times its weight in water within the cells of skin, making it an excellent moisturiser
  • Boosts skins moisture content and prevents moisture loss
  • This results in increased smoothness, softening and decreased wrinkles
  • It also has an ability to remove waste matter from cells including those where there is little blood circulation
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Hyaluronic acid is considered equally important, if not more important, than Collagen for the skin
  • Anti ageing, elimination of skin imperfections and wrinkles

I can’t wait to have a go with this and hopefully will write about it then.

4. Blackhead Solution 3 Step
Full Size Product: Sachet (3,500 Won / £2 approx)
This powerful, yet gentle, 3 step nose clearing kit provides the A-Z in achieving a spick and span nose. Step 1 instantly removes blackheads and unclogs pores, Step 2 extracts all pore cloggers and Step 3 tightens, soothes and cleanses the pores. Complete with a dry patch and wet patch for anytime, anywhere use, this 3 step system features optimal pore purifying benefits for clear, healthy looking skin.

How to use: On clean skin, apply Step 1 to the nose. Then apply Step 2.  Use Step 3 last.

Those instructions are brought to you by the Kitty Chinchilla School of Technical Writing……

DSCN0805
Ingredients:
in Korean but main ones are Green Tea Extract, Lavender Extract, Aloe Vera Leaf Extract, Apple Extract, Lemon Extract, Lime Extract, Camomile Extract, Peppermint Extract, Grapefruit Extract.

My Thoughts

Well, that has made me a bit peckish! Those obviously aren’t the ingredients that are going to extract the nasties from your nose but in my experience all nose pore packs are much of a muchness anyway. The ones that I have usually used are 1 step – they stick to your nose, you pull them off and nasty stuff goes with it. I am under the impression with these that the first step softens the nasties, the second extracts them and the third tightens everything back up and soothes any redness.

I must comment on the graphics again – just look at that little evil piggy!! Torturing the poor little blackheads and making them cry! I love his wings and puffs of hellfire smoke (??)

I do have blackheads. Always have done as far as I can remember. I think I am much more aware of them than other people would be, as is always the case when it comes to your own imperfections (rightly perceived or otherwise). They do not, however, look as bad (or as even) as this:

blackhead 1(source)

I have tried many things over the years to rid myself of the buggers for once and for all but to no avail. I have promised a post on this very subject some time in the not too distant future after I have tried a few more things out in the world of K Beauty (where they are very very keen on blackhead extraction products). One final observation is this: the blurb says that ‘Complete with a dry patch and wet patch for anytime, anywhere use‘ …….so walking round the supermarket it is then!

Conclusion

I really love this box! (I think I’ve said that already). I will use every item in it, which is rare with Memeboxes. Everything that I have tried from Elizavecca, I really enjoy. They are good quality and great value for money. They do what they claim to do and that is everything in skincare … well, the whimsical graphics don’t hurt at all as well. I want to get my little mitts on more of their products and luckily they are more widely available than some other Korean brands that we have seen in Memeboxes.

Some places I have seen them are as follows:

Korea Depart – A few products. I haven’t used this store myself yet and apparently their shipping and packaging fees can be confusing but they have very good prices and I haven’t heard any bad reviews yet. I will try them soon and report back.

Tester Korea – Just the Jella Pack at the moment but TK has a great service where you can request any product and they get back to you super quick and let you know whether they can source it. The prices are usually full retail price if they do that though, which should be taken into account. I have ordered from them before with no problems.

Yes Style – Another one I haven’t used yet but they do have a few products at ok prices. Again I have heard of no major problems with skincare purchases on here.

Rose Rose Shop – They have quite a selection on here, as well as the opportunity to order in bulk. Do I need 10 Water Coating Masks?? They also have the Hydrogels that look epic! Again, I have not ordered from here before but have heard good things. They are also on ebay for those who prefer to shop there as Bring Bring Shop and Ruby Ruby Shop, both of which carried Elizavecca at time of posting.

Also on ebay:

Blueprint 21 – .has a selection of Elizavecca at time of posting.

Another shop called Honest Skin was selling Elizavecca at cut throat prices recently but I cannot in all good faith recommend them as there were some issues and some very very poor customer service. If that situation changes I will update this.

Any questions or requests, please let me know

Until the next one, Charlotte x

Memebox Winter Essential Masks

thumbnail_christmascollection3

This will be the final ‘whole’ Memebox that I will review as the ones I received prior to this are quite frankly all over the place, some parts in use, some in other lovely people’s homes as a result of swaps or sales and some gone to the ether that is the empties pile. Not to worry though as I still have a shitload of value sets and then lots of individual products to review – I’ll even venture out of K Beauty!

If you want to know one major thing about me it is that I LOVE masks – any kind of masks……all kinds of masks! Not as much as I love bunnies (that’s a given and for evidence of how right that is please see the bonus Billy picture at the end) but they are pretty high up there and therefore I would always want to purchase a mask box, however angry I am with a company at the time.

I bought this on the 18th December when it was released and although it wasn’t shipped until the 23rd, I received it on the 5th of January, so not too bad for holiday posting time. The box cost $23 + 6.99 shipping (approx £19.50) and has a Memevalue of $72 (£46.80) for 6 different types of products.

This was one of the boxes sadly absent one of the invaluable information cards and the information was all online and is still there (here) at the moment but who knows for how much longer, as the site continues to change.

DSCN0567

This is the marketing blurb that drew me in (not really .. I’ve said before I don’t read these but MASKSSSSS!!)

Box Description

The winter season is the most festive time of the year, filled with holiday parties and homeward travels. While winter wonderland may be all fun and games for the mind and soul, it’s not the same story for the skin! During the winter season, your skin needs more lovin’, especially with the constant switching between moisture-sucking indoor heating to frigid cold outdoor temperatures. The harsh environment leaves skin dull, flaky, and as dry-as-a-desert. No matter how much makeup and moisturizer you slather onto your face, when skin cells are dehydrated and malnourished, no amount of highlighter or luminizer will bring back that radiance.   Fret not, because your winter skin care solution is right here. This box, full of winter’s essential masks, caters to all winter skincare needs. Each mask is formulated with unique potent ingredients designed to nourish the skin cells and instantly restore lost radiance. Hydrate, renew, and revitalize the skin for noticeably smoother, velvety, younger-looking skin!

Contents

1. VELIEVE Girlish Mask 20ml X 3ea

Full size product: 20ml X 3ea ($7)
Randomly selected from Collagen Lifting, Honey Moisture, Vita Shining, Aloe Soothing

Velieve’s Girlish Mask series comes in 4 different types each enriched with natural ingredients catered to target different skin care concerns – marine collagen for firming and tightening, honey extracts for nourishing, lemon extracts for brightening, and aloe vera extracts for moisturizing and soothing. The thin pulp type sheet masks adhere tightly to skin with ease and without any mask essence drooping down.

How to use:
Place the sheet mask over clean face. Remove the mask after 15~20 minutes of rest. Pat in the remaining essence for full absorbance.

DSCN0602
Out of four possibilities, I received the random selection of two Aloe Soothing and one Collagen lifting masks.

Ingredients (Aloe): Water, Glycerin, Glycereth-26, Aloe Barbadensis leaf extract (0.2%), Butylene Glycol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Panthenol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Allantoin, Coceth-7, PPG-1-PEG-9 Lauryl Glycol Ether, Methylparaben, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance.

Ingredients (Collagen): Water, Glycerin, Glycereth-26, Hydrolyzed Collagen (0.1%), Corallina Officinalis Extract, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Panthenol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Allantoin, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Coceth-7, PPG-1-PEG-9 Lauryl Glycol Ether, Methylparaben, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance.

My Thoughts

The blurb on the back of the Aloe mask is as follows: .
“Greedy girls soothing mask for the skin relief” – Aloe Vera leaf extract protects the skin against harmful environments and stress making the skin more moist and healthier by delivering moisture.

and the Collagen mask:
“Greedy girls firming mask for V line” – Marine Collagen ingredient restores lost firmness and brings back the V line while increasing moisture for moist and firm skin.

Well that sounds good. I presume the grumpy looking moppets on the front are the ‘Greedy girls’? I’m not really one for cutesy things but at least these aren’t as alarming as the very scary Ddung girls, who are also featured on K Beauty products. I did have some of those items but I burnt them (…gave them to someone who would appreciate them more).

grumpy girls(Source)

My V line needs all the help it can get to be honest. The ‘V LIne’ is the Korean term for ‘A slim and oval face narrowing towards the chin’ (source). My face is wide and round and does not noticeably narrow towards the chin! Hence, the vast amounts of help needed 🙂

Aloe masks will also come in very handy this summer when I intend to venture outdoors and enjoy what little sunshine the English summer brings. I always put sheet masks in the fridge at least half an hour before use (even when it is below freezing outside) as I enjoy the cooling sensation (and it is actually meant to be good for your skin – I will look further into that in a later post) and that will be extra luscious in the summer stickiness.

If anyone needs a guideline on how to use a sheet mask, the company kindly provides this demo:

sheet mask(Source)

Sheet masks are sheet masks though, they are not miraculous – they mostly provide a lovely soothing, moisturising boost to your skin and I think a lot of why I love them so much is the pampering aspect of having to lie there perfectly still whilst they do their work. I do however pretty much always fall asleep with them on so they have a dual advantage there as a sleep aid!

If you would like to purchase some of these masks there are various listings on ebay. The one that I used for this images shown here is called Littlecutiepie1 (which definitely fits with the petulant poppets!). They are selling at £1.59 ($2.44) per mask at the time of posting;

2. RIRE Patting Water Pack 300ml
Full size product: 300ml ($42)
Randomly selected from Lifting, Brightening, Moisture

The yellow Lifting pack is made from evening primrose extracts and works to tighten and rejuvenate tired skin. The purple Brightening pack bases its formula on violet extracts which help to balance and brighten uneven skin tone. The pink Moisture pack is enriched with a blend of cherry blossom extracts to deliver rich hydration and healthy moisture & oil balance.

How to use:
Remove makeup residues with cleansing oil or foam. Then fill 2/3 of a bowl with water and drop in 1~2 lid-ful of the Patting Water Pack. Mix well and gently pat it all over the face for 15~20 times. Do not rinse afterwards.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Sodium Citrate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Coceth-7, PPG-1-PEG-9 Lauryl Glycol Ether, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Alcohol Denat, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Viola Tricolor Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Betaine, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance.

My Thoughts

This was the big ticket item. A previous Memeaddicts holy grail was a similar patting water by a company called Blithe. The wonderful Veri Tazy of the blog Pulchritudinous did some very valuable experimentation adding patting water to existing spray mists to cut out the rigmarole of the basin technique described above. Her post on this can be found here.

If you would rather try the product in the manner in the manner to which it was intended, this informative video may help.

I have some sachets of Blithe from a previous box that I have been meaning to add to my aloe mists but as with all things, I still have not got round to it. Now I have this one too! The blurb on the side of the box specifies that this variant (Brightening) is also good for ‘Deep cleansing – Exfoliation – Pore Care – Brightening – Skin Tone Improvement – Nutrition Supply – Control of Skin Balance – Promote the Period of Skin Turn Over’.

The liquid is extremely gloopy (a bit reminiscent of washing up liquid) and smells…….well……exactly like washing up liquid! Perhaps that is harsh, maybe more like a really cheap bubble bath that you had as a kid (that could be a good thing as they are meant to be very gentle on your skin and eyes!).

Anyone?

5f942de29436583f6f9cb0a65ceda70c(Source)

I’m not sure whether I will keep this as I’m inherently lazy and it does seem like a bit of a faff to be honest.

If you would like to purchase your very own Matey patting water the full range can be found on ebay for around £15.25 ($23) here.

3. INOFACE Real Natural Pulp Essence Sheet Mask 23ml

How to use:
Spread the sheet mask evenly over clean face. Rest for 15~20 minutes. Remove and pat in the remaining mask essence onto skin for full absorbance.

(Best Before October 23rd, 2015)

DSCN0963(please excuse the terrible photo – I have used this mask due to the earlier expiry date and this was a quick one I took when it arrived!)

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Chlorphenesin, Methylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Snail Secretion Filtrate (12mg), Fragrance.

My Thoughts

I love anything to do with snail goo!

Not because I am strange (although I am …) but because it has done wonders for my skin in other mediums. I speak of course of the Holy Grail (HG) that is Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence. I will no doubt talk of this more in the future but I loves it!! I also love that brands Snail Bee sheet masks and of course wanted to compare this to their wondrousness.

I’ll be quick. It was OK …………just ok. I am glad that I got this option, having received the collagen and aloe in the previous mask types. However, the snail secretion filtrate, as you can see, is barely a blip on the ingredients radar. I need MORE SNAIL than that to keep this visage glowing!!

To demonstrate, I bring you snail wars! This is the Inoface mask:

tumblr_mz0dugctFE1svecmko1_400(Source)

Never going to win is it? *sigh*

On the other hand – this is the snail I want to slime over my skin products – Super Snail!:

spzky(Source)

Enough of the shenanigans and on to the important question: are the snails harmed when donating their goo?

It is difficult to find a definitive answer. We do know that the snails are not killed to extract the slime / mucin. They can collect from the same snail many times over which I am sure is much more cost effective. Similar to the bee venom industry,  the snails are mechanically stressed by moving over some form of collection tray. I am going to try to look into this further in one upcoming post to celebrate the recent announcement from South Korea that they are planning to ban animal testing for cosmetics, joining not only the E.U., but also India, Brazil and China in their efforts to stop the use of animal testing for beauty products (see here for further information). Please look out for it and if there is anything you would like me to look into (within reason!) please let me know.

I couldn’t find these to buy online (plenty of Benton ones though) but the company does have a website at http://www.ino-face.com.

4. ESTHETIC HOUSE Collagen Jelly Mask Pack 100ml
Full size product: 100ml ($13)
Swallow your skepticism—pig collagen has been shown to be highly effective in firming and tightening the elasticity of skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Rich in collagen peptides extracted from pork rinds, this leave-in, highly-concentrated collagen facial mask pack from Esthetic House absorbs easily, leaving skin firmer, nourished, moisturized, and freshened. Suitable for all skin types.

How to use:
Apply a moderate amount to clean face, massaging until absorbed. No need for rinsing off.

pizap.com14235003717643
Ingredients: in Korean only

My Thoughts

It is unfortunate that I couldn’t find an English ingredient list as the product itself is pretty unassuming and dare I say it, a bit boring looking. I have a similar collagen piggy mask by the brand Elizavecca, which is a lot more interesting, and I intend to use that one first and then consider this one if that produces decent enough results. The products entry on Alibaba lists the following plus points:

Pig skin is quite simillar to human skin and it contains rich collagen and elastin.

This is facial pack contains rich collagen (50%) from pig skin.

– It contains 50g of collagen extracted sanitarily from fresh pig skin sterilized and deodorized.

(It’s much higher than sheet/gel mask products.)

– It contains valuable plant extracts also, such as bean fermentation extract, macadamia seed oil, cacao seed extract.

– It keeps your skin fully moisturized.

– It tightens skin cells and presents you a young face.

– It is gel type and is applied onto skin smoothly.

– It’s absorbed into skin  quickly.

– No need to wash, it can be used as sleeping pack.

– It’s good for all skin types.

– It’s 6 free (paraben, ethanol, animal oil, coloring, benzophenone, mineral oil)

The mask smells very lightly fruity (hey, better than smelling of a pig sty!). I would use this as a sleeping mask and hope that the promised tightening and firming came to pass! I don’t have many wrinkles but some general improvements in elasticity would be much appreciated. I may compare the two when I am finished.

If you would like your own piggy goodness it looks like this mask is available here

My Thoughts

We received some sleeping masks from Lassie’el previously that were really very good so I hold out high hopes for these very cute looking masks.

The company is named as ‘the god’s gift of nature for your skin everyday to restore youthful skin’. ‘Lassie’ is the Scottish nickname for girls and ‘el’ refers to Ancient Syria’s ‘father of gods’.

Yeah, me neither??!

I do like their concept though – they intend their products to free you from the short shelf life of other skincare products to help you feel like you are using new products all the time. So basically, instead of huge jars and bottles that you never finish (especially if you hoard Meme products, am I right?) you have individual pouches and pods all ready to face another day! I do think this is especially good for travel and they could also aim their products at that market with a few tweaks I’m sure.

I haven’t used one yet (there are 4 in the packet) as I have similar large pot masks open that I need to use up first. I love the addition of the little lid so that you can use each pod more than once (to be stored in the fridge). The sleeping masks also contained enough for more than one go (I had avocado and pearl ones) but as they did not have such a nifty gadget I utilised that age old favorite tin foil!

Yogurt is meant to be great for soothing and cooling the skin, so these may be another gem for the summer months. It can also exfoliate, prevent skin oxidation and clean out pores. Raspberry can apparently help prevent freckles and age spots and has benefits for anti ageing and firming of the skin. The website specifies that these masks are recommended for 1. anyone who wants to prevent wrinkles and help with age defying and 2. anyone who is concerned about blemishes such as freckles and age spots. They also do a Kiwi, Aloe and Strawberry version of these masks.

I haven’t been able to find these directly to buy online but I do know that Forever 21 in the US has started stocking the sleeping packs (those lucky Americans again!!) and Lassie’el do have a comprehensive website here.

6. PURE SMILE Jewelry Bubble Ruby & Pure Bubble Royal Jelly 3g X 2ea
Full size product: 3g X 2ea ($2)
These two wash-off facial packs are each formulated from concentrates of ruby extracts and royal jelly extracts. The Jewelry Bubble Ruby pack is a skin soothing and replenishing formula that consists of ruby powder, green tea, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera leaf, glycerin, vitamin E, and portulaca extracts. The Pure Bubble Royal Jelly pack is also enriched with over 40 kinds of vitamins and minerals and helps treat acne-prone skin types by deeply cleansing the pores and nourishing damaged skin.

How to use:
Spread the pack evenly over clean, towel-dried face. Gently massage the self-generated bubbles 2~3 times as the bubbles penetrate deep into the pores and extract skin impurities clogged up. Rinse off with lukewarm water when the bubbling stops.

My Thoughts

Whelp……they are Pure Smile and they are teeny bubbling mask pods. I do like bubbling masks (especially the Elizavecca Carbonated bubble clay mask) but Pure Smile is a bit cheap. I have been using the Pure Smile Jewellery Scrub that came in a previous box and I am not altogether impressed. It does the job but in a not very pleasant and fun way.

The packaging is a bit shit – they look like those marmalade pods that you get at cheap B&B’s. The ingredients sound better – ruby extracts and royal jelly. We shall see, the proof is in the pudding or in this case, the marmalade portion.

Pure Smile has it’s own website here.

Conclusion

This is not the best of the Mask boxes that I have received from Memebox, in fact I would probably say that it is my least favorite ….by a very long shot. This one disappointed me.
I will try most of the products out and although the curation is fitting to the theme, the quality of the products just isn’t there. They all seem to be inferior dupes of items that we have known and loved before. It seems cheap and although I don’t usually take heed in the perceived value of the box, that does show that this one is a lesser box by far.  I think I will enjoy the Lassie’el masks and the sheet masks are of course always welcome (even though they are obviously not the best of their type). I wonder if at this point the knew that they were stopping shipping to most of the world? It does smack a little of giving up.
Then again, they came back hard with the first two boxes that I have reviewed, which were both pretty good (Night care and Detox and Renew). Maybe it is purely what they can get their hands on at the time? Who knows .. we probably never will.

I said at the start that this would be the last actual box I would review but if there are any old ones that you would particularly like me to do and I happen to have received, please let me know. If not, it’s onto the value sets….

Cheers
